Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibberd has the (partial) cast list of characters introduced in Season Three. Reproduced below with original role descriptions:
- Mance Rayder: We’ve heard about him all season. A former member of the Night’s Watch who became the “King Beyond the Wall,” the leader of the Wildlings.
- Daario Naharis: A confident and seductive warrior.
- Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: A teenage brother and sister duo with special insights.
- Edmure Tully: A brash young member of the Tully family.
- Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn Stark’s uncle.
- Lady Selyse Florent: Stannis Baratheon’s wife.
- Shireen: Stannis’ daughter.
- Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell’s sharp-witted grandmother.
- Beric Dondarrion: A skilled knight who is the leader of the outlaw group Brotherhood Without Banners.
- Thoros of Myr: A red priest who follows the same religion as Melisandre.
- Tormund Giantsbane: A Wildling raider.
Mind you that this might not be all, so please no cries of despair (as if, after you know who definitely is in):
Now, if a character is not listed here, does that mean they are not in season three? Apparently not. Because Benioff then added: “And a few others … holy hell that’s a lot of new faces.”
Hear Me Roar: So now we know. I am especially happy for our long-time reader Blackfish Blues. As noted in the article, since they are adapting the third book over two seasons, there would be more uncertainty as to the roles cast this year – and that has now been put to rest. Thank you, David!

We already know Ramsay is in, as he’s been name-dropped on the show. I guess it is possible they’ll postpone his entrance for a year, though that would also mean a season without Alfie Allen. Given what poor Theon is about to go through, that might be the best way to play it.
Maxwell JamesQuote Reply
The man who played Dondarrion in Season 1 for maybe 10 seconds never was officially part of the cast. At that time somebody here explained that there was some legal contractual reason for that as this way they could recast him later on.

Wow, a list that includes nearly all missing characters and people still find room to complain.
For the person looking for Edmure, he is clearly listed, and just because it is not specifically stated that hes Cat’s brother does NOT mean they are changing that.
Ramsay has already been stated as being cast, so his exclusion from this list, with a footnote stating that this list is not complete, should really not be raising so many alarms.

Perhaps Ramsay is not considered a ‘new’ character because he has already been mentioned in the show and is already involved in the action by now ? We just have not seen him yet. The actor will be part of season3 , but the character itself could be considered as late-season2 ?
TimdorionQuote Reply
I really doubt they’ll keep Alfie Allen off-screen for a whole season. Either:
1. Ramsay’s absence from the list is just a slip.
2. they don’t want to name him (notice how Roose also never mentions his name), thus aiming for a twist similar to the one in the book.
3. Dagmer is Ramsay, something I still think is a bit far fetched. But then, what was that ‘extreme looking’ casting call about?

Finally conversation about the Reeds can transition from complaints about their absence to complaints about the casting decisions. ;)

Il be honest that im one of the few people here who is not interested in the Reeds at all but whatever, its been a great week to be a Thrones fan and im glad for all the posters here who wanted them in so bad!
Hoping that the fact Ramsay is not mentioned doesnt lead to the theory that Dagmer is Reek comes true but we shall see.
Only thing im a bit gutted about is no mention of The Viper. I had a feeling they would hold him off until 4 but didnt want to believe it. This has made me think that will be the case and il have to wait 2 years to see one of my favourites but never mind, this is a good news week so lets enjoy it!

The next time someone isn’t immediately in the story (say, Oberyn, who doesn’t show up here), can we all take a deep breath and the many reasons to parse out characters and just give the producers the benefit of the doubt?
So few of these characters above are actually necessary in the strictest sense. Yet collectively they add to the feel and depth of the story. And D&D recognize that and are executing on that. They should get a little credit when it would be easy to cut a Reed or two or Olenna,

My guess is that they’ll have Ramsay in armor & helm in the next episode – as a glorified extra. He’ll then do his betrayal of Theon directly after Theon accepts Luwin’s idea of taking the black. Then, they don’t need Ramsay & Theon until they film Dance.
No Red Viper, but they are casting Daario? I’m going through ASOS again right now, and the Red Viper appears several chapters before Daario. However, I could live with the Red Viper in Season 4.
Maggie Smith would be great as The Queen of Thorns. Too big a name/too expensive after Harry Potter, though?

I used to have the same opinion, on not wanting to lose Theon and Alfie. But here’s the thing: it’s two whole seasons. Of just pure torture. That’s not a storyline, it’s sadism.
They could show some torture and the Kyra escape, maybe half a season. But… it’s cheaper and easier to just simply ask him to come back in two years. There’s simply too much time to make up, and really, nothing happens. TBH, that half season makes a lot of sense to fit into the two seasons Feast/Dance/beginning of Winds will take.
Plus, the mere fact that Theon was alive was a shock to me. I think it could be a heckuva reveal in Season 5.

With so many characters coming in, I’m starting to get worried that the show is going to buckle under the pressure. This season has ridden a very thin line in that regard. They’ve managed to make it work this year, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that we lost so many main characters last year. Even so, there’s been much more jumping around this year than last, and it seems this will increase when more characters get piled on.
I understand the showrunner’s reasons for why the series only has 10 episodes, but I really wish there were more (like 12 or 13) to smooth out potential problems in this regard.
John WebsterQuote Reply
A couple of guesses on Daario:
1. The show has likely to introduce romantic interests earlier, I think, because, without internal monologue, romance takes a bit longer to play out without being ridiculous. Also, it’s not Martin’s strong suit (though Daario is intentionally annoying).
2. If we get three cities in Slaver’s Bay, I think Dracarys is earlier than Episode 10. She does little before Astapor even if they drop Arstan into season 2. So if we keep three cities, I think things will be moved up. And if they combine two of the cities, it’s possible we get Astapor combined with Yunkai, even if it seems to make more sense in the short term to combine Yunkai with Mereen.

Too much good news. What are people supposed to complain about now? I propose that we start by getting really upset by how they have butchered Blackfish. He is nothing like the tv version in the books. I don’t know who will play him or how he will be portrayed but I’m super upset that my assumptions on how D&D will handle him have ruined his character. He never said in the books what I imagine they will have him say on he show. I just imagined them making him a cannibal and that is not like the books at all. I hate to be a purist but I’m really angry with all these imaginary changes I’m thinking of.

ChryseeQuote Reply
I agree with you completely, *I* personally would much rather keep the element of surprise. However, and I don’t know if this has to do with contracts or what-not, but they kept NCW and threw him a line or two. Yes, their situations differ, however it could also be on account of the show-runners being concerned over the casual viewer’s inability to remember who’s who on the show. I’m not saying this is how it should be, I’m just trying to place myself in their shoes. Also, and this may come off as cruel, but it’s not my intention (as I have a soft spot for Theon): showing Theon’s scenes under the Dreadfort may offer a brief moment of catharsis to a lot of viewers. They could, on the other hand, backfire and gross out other viewers. It’s a tricky decision, that’s for sure. I’m really curious to see how they’ll go about this.

So who would this leave to be cast now? I would say if you take away minor characters that D&D might chose to either merge or not include then that list above is pretty complete. I can think of:
The Viper (LOVE him but as I said above wont be suprised to see him/ Dorne left until season 4)
Belwas (Il be honest I fear for him being included which makes me sad as he is hillarious and bad ass too. we shall see though)
Val (again, cool character but will they include her?)
Mace (Push him to season 4 and have him arrive when Oberyn comes into the story?)
Other than these I cant think of any major additions to the cast that would be made for Season 3. Theres The Goat but we have heard he is in already, a few people from Essos maybe? But I would think the list above will turn out to be pretty final bar a couple more.

Hmm if the Viper storyline is pushed back to S4, is it fair to assume that Joff/Tyrion/Tywin event is also pushed back? S3 focus on the Riverlands and the North / Dany while KL takes a backseat secondary story?
On another note, would it be possible to recast Conan Stevens as the mountain once again for S4 (assuming the Viper is pushed to S4). Nothing against the new actor but casual viewers don’t even recognize him as the freak mountain of season 1 unless specifically told by the cast members.

Kudos to D&D. Now that they are not restricted by HBO’s straitjacket of limited episodes to the story (1 1/2 or more for ASoS), all those secondary/tertiary characters can be properly introduced.
I think this shows the sign that HBO is finally recognized the primer position GoT in their buzz factor and lineup given that Broadwalk Empire and other expensive/prestigious endeavors are quickly fading away. The budget probably won’t be as tight and future seasons are all but assured. (Barring the collapse of ratings in season 5 due to the travelog nature of AFfC and ADwD)

So Selyse and Shireen will be featured. Can someone clear something up for me? I thought I remember Melisandre saying (before she sleeps with Stannis) that his wife was sickly and that he had no children. Is this accurate or is my memory bad? Making Selyse sickly is obviously an easy change, but I’m just wondering how Shireen will fit in if I am remembering Mel’s words correctly.
I’m also glad to see the Queen of Thorns on the list. I was beginning to doubt her inclusion when they changed Margaery into such an outright schemer.

There’s no way Ramsay is Dagmer. It doesn’t add up. He’s been on the Iron Islands undercover long enough to grow into his mid-40s and become the FIRST MATE of a ship? No dice. He’s at the Dreadfort and will show up and capture Winterfell. Theon’s story can’t continue without Ramsay. And the fact that Roose Bolton has mentioned him a few times to Robb just proves that he’ll be in the show sooner or later. Since they didn’t have Bran treat and feast with all the Northern lords this season it didn’t make sense to have Reek/Ramsay just show up at Winterfell.

I’ve noticed quite a few are complaining about characters that aren’t listed, despite B&B explicitly saying this ISN’T an exhaustive list, but I have a couple of ideas about what’s going to happen:
Since the Red Viper comes to King’s Landing for Joffrey’s wedding and to get some justice while he’s at it, I think we can safely suggest he won’t show up until season four. I think Joffrey’s wedding will be early in season four (maybe halfway through like Viserys’s death) and that Tyrion’s murder of Tywin and escape will the the penultimate episode. Season Five will likely open with Varys smuggling out Tyrion. As for people saying he shows up before Daario, so how can he be introduced later…um…Edmure and the Blackfish were introduced in BOOK ONE and are just now being included on the show. Among numerous other late introductions. So that argument doesn’t really hold water.
I’m also surprised that so many didn’t realize Edmure was being included since we’ve already seen audition footage. Based on the actor in that footage I’m gonna suggest “young” is a relative term. Late 30′s/early 40′s, possibly. I like Dean Lennox Kelly for him.
For that matter, since we’ve seen a Vargo Hoat audition, we know he’s in, as well, but no mention here.
I also think the young “extreme looking” man/boy is Ramsay. I mean, who else would it be?
Other characters I’m nearly certain will be included, despite the lack of mention, are Mace Tyrell, Strong Belwas, Qyburn, Lemoncloak, Tom O’Sevens and likely at least one of the more prominent Wildling women (Val, Dalla).

I don’t think we will see Ramsay during S3 and S4, just like we don’t see him in ASOS.
This story has so many point of views, so many locations. A lot of non-readers I know complain that it jumps too fast from one place to another. Casting Ramsay means adding another location, and some complexity to an already very complex story.
The main argument for Ramsay’s casting is that they would have to do without Alfie Allen for 2 years. Ok, but if they keep him in the show, what is it for ? One horrible torture scene per year ? Or they make big changes to the story but then -> complexity + no surprise when ‘Reek’ appears.
If they don’t keep him we can expect to see him again for a surprise come-back in season 4 … if we are lucky enough to get there.
We may see Ramsay him episode 20, though, as a full-plate warrior or maybe as Dagmer (I’m waiting for a solid explanation then)
And of course, I’m very happy with all these casting news !

I think he’s cool too, but to be fair, he is one of the characters that could easily be replaced by another already-existing character, as they have done with Loras. I have read the books and really love them as they are, but, since in television you can’t stop and turn back a few pages to remeber who’s who, I really do hope that they cut down some of the characters…
As for the Reeds, I do like them in the books, and I’m glad that they we will get to see them, but it bothers me a little that their introduction will probably mean we will not get to see much more of Osha, and I have been really enjoying Natalia Tena in the part. As far as we know from Osha and Rickon in the books, I could have imagined they removing the Reeds entirely and have Bran and Rickon go together beyond the wall, alongside Hodor and Osha (as someone have said it, they would need someone for Bran to interact with, besides Hodor). But now that we will have the Reeds, Osha and Rickon may go in their own way (which, to be frank, I don’t recall right now).

Somehow they are going to have to introduce the Reeds on the road or something. So we are going to have Osha a little while longer, which would be a good thing. I don’t think that Osha would have worked as replacement Reeds and as Bran’s tour guide beyond the Wall because of certain things that were already established in her character in Season 1. (She wants to go as far south as south goes. She’s afraid of the direwolves. She doesn’t really have as much connection to the mystical.) I’ve really liked what they did with Osha this season and I know that Rickon will be in good hands when they go to cannibal island.

We may see (aka NOT see) Ramsay and the sack of Winterfell through Osha’s eyes. Eg: the Ironborn are drunk and cocky and cheering themselves on (kinda like Theon in the ep 20 preview) when there is an attack. Osha keeps the kids in the crypts while there are general horror-sounds above. They eventually emerge to find everyone dead and the castle smoking. We never see who did it, and we don’t see what happened to Theon, though it might be assumed he’s in a stack of bodies somewhere. They leave Winterfell…
This random speculation brought to you by me, who is usually wrong tbh. But there are many ways the sack can happen without us actually meeting Bolton’s bastard until a later season.
They can even use Bran’s dreams to ‘show/not really show’ it.

Really excited for Queen of Thorns. I was a little worried because TV Margeary is older and fully capable of some scheming of her own, but the Queen is so lively and refreshing character in the books I hoped D&D will still want her onscreen. So we will have grandma and grandaughter scheming together, works great for me.
Red Viper isn´t important till PW so I quess this confirms PW will be season 4.
Belwas is really just a part of the scenery. He has one bad ass scene and next disappears back to background. I don´t think D&D include him with actors. If he is on (and they need to keep the amount of characters around Danny reasonal) he will be just some extra/underfive.
Don´t care about Tullis, but Robb and Cat need something to do till the RW. I quess they will fight with Mountain and Vargo Hout who controls the Harrenhall now?
Reeds make sense as Bran will do nothing but wander in wilderness for two seasons. He better atleast have some companion closer his age.

Good news, but I am a little concerned that they are espanding the cast too much. Blackfish is cool, but he doesn’t serve too much of a purpose. Ditto the Reeds at this point. Queen of Thorns I was worried about due to the expansion of Margaery, but I suppose she can still get in a few good scenes.

EDIT: EDIT:
sunspear,
I was thinking the same thing, but that’ll be a bit of a stretch, don’t you think? You have to believe Stannis (and Selyse!) would actually consider sacrificing her, until Davos convinces him otherwise, and that would take his character in a completely different way than presented in the books. Mel’s a fanatic, Stannis isn’t really, and he seems to care about his daughter’s well-being.

I’ve always liked Osha as well. Especially after she became so attached to the Stark boys and made it her obligation to care for them like a momma bear. She fears the North, but right now the South is dreadful and almost impossible to travel safely with two little ones. She’s great and all, but she is so not the person to guide Bran on his mystical powers, which is why it’s perfect for the Reeds to come into the picture.
I’m thinking they’ll travel together for most of season 3 and then she’ll split with Rickon. Where Rickon is going, he’s going to need a serious protector and she can fill that spot.
I wonder if the Reed introduction will be as simple as a noise coming up behind the traveling Starks and it ends there so we can open up the season with the story? There are so many different ways D&D could introduce us to the Reed kids, but it would be cool to have them pull a ninja move on us.

I have to agree with this. Bran (book bran, aka Bran) is way too young to be with a 16 year old girl. I’m not disagreeing with your choice but the show absolutely should not pull out all the stops to cast a big name in a minor role. Now if a big name is willing to join the cast at a lower than normal rate that would be a different story.

People need to realize, again, the show is not the books. Jaime has already been around more in this season than he was in ACoK, same with Littlefinger. They also won’t just cut out a character for more than two seasons just because that’s the way the books came out. I’d look for Ramsay and Theon and at least a portion of their ADWD storyline to be moved to up, because it IS happening simultaneously with much of the other action.

This is correct because book 4 and 5 are happening pretty much at the same time.

To any who have expressed concern over the idea that the show might “buckle” under too large a cast, let’s keep in mind that the cast gets thinned pretty damn substantially pretty damn soon here. Assuming D&D stick with the books on these (and I have no reason to think they won’t in this arena) we’re going to lose just about as many characters as we gain in the next season (or two):
-Balon Greyjoy
-Robb
-Catelyn (sortakinda)
-Tywin
-Ygritte
-The Old Bear
-Joffrey
…Some of the added characters in the EW list will almost surely get a fraction of the screen time of quite a few in that list I just posted.

I do wonder how they’re going to handle introducing Selyse and Shireen into the story after they sort of went out of their way in Episode 2 to write both of them out as actual characters, but I’m glad they’ve been cast. Maybe while Stannis was gone at the Blackwater, Selyse and Mel got to be BFFs and she gained back some of her energy or something, so she’s more like her book self. Or maybe they’ll just retcon that dialogue altogether.

Storytelling wise, it would probably be best to keep him on ice for two seasons, HBO lawyers and Allen’s can work out the semantics. They’ll have to completely change Theon’s story otherwise, and I’m sorry, his story works in the books.

I probably should have worded my post a bit differently. I meant more “wrote them off as characters who had an actual role to play”. I know Selyse was in Episode 1, but then in Episode 2, Mel talks about how she’s sickly and spends all her time in a tower (or something). If they decide to use her after all, I hope she retains some of her book personality.
As for Shireen, it kind of bothers me that they had Stannis go with the “I’ll give you a (bastard) son!” motivation if she still exists (because I feel like it’s a bit OOC from what we see re: Stannis’s feelings about Shireen in the books), but I’ll get over it.

Lyonel the RedQuote Reply
After thinking on it, having another practically full complement of players for season 3 also gives strong evidence to two things I think/hope are true:
1) D&D do strongly respect the source material and value characters for what they bring to the story, not to the plot. They are not interested in making this simple nor easy. They are not changing things to change things. So many characters here could have been cut.
But more interestingly:
2) I think this is also evidence that they are confident that they will get long past Book 3. Some of the characters are relevant only for what they introduce in terms of the long game, or aren’t even really all that relevant until the future. Do they take this much care if they aren’t reasonably confident they are getting to Dance? I’m not sure — see item #1 — but maybe not.

Any idea who’s going to play the Blackfish? I’ve seen wild variations in the way he’s been depicted; from a Daniel Day-Lewis sort of look (obviously, they’re not going to get DDL for the role. I’m referring to appearance), to someone resembling the guy who plays the Greatjon (only smaller).
I’m not very good with this sort of thing, but I’m looking forward to everyone’s ideas (no doubt, some have been posted already, but I’m too lazy to go through all 330 posts). I doubt his role will be all that big, given the fact much of it has already been cut out, but they might expand it a bit for the new seasons. In any case, it’s probably not going to be a huge role, but I’m sure the casting department will find someone who will exceed all expectations, as usual.
I’m bummed that GoT S2 is already over, but at least we have casting & filming to look forward to (and of course, TWoW at some point, and a new Dunk & Egg in the meantime). It went by so fast. Just by hearing the name I was spoiled so I think D&D should be wary and not name episode 9 of season 3 “the RW”. I would go for something more subtle like “Send my regards” or “Castamere”

Ok, so here’s my semi-realistic wishlist for the roles we know we’re getting now:
Olenna Tyrell: Maggie Smith/Sian Phillips
Edmure Tully: Kevin McKidd, see also: Dondarrion, Beric. Either role for him. whatever gets him the most screen time.
Balckfish: Ciaran hinds maybe? He’s a powerhouse actor, and I would love to see him on the show, lake of trademark Tully-auburn hair notwithstanding
Meera: Sarah Bolger all the way on this one
Jojen: Not sure on this one. someone younger than Bolger, and the casting department has done an excellent job thus far. If anything, clone Issac and be done with it. :^)
Giantsbabe (tee hee hee): Maybe Ray Stevenson? Brendan Gleeson if they’re going older.
Mance Rayder: James Frain or John Hawkes. I have never read Mance as the rough and tumble Purefoy type, so I like these two. Also, Hawekes is in a band, so Mance’s musical talents could be included.
Daario: They can go any which way with this role for me as the character isn’t so much defined by a look (depsite having a distinct appearance) so much as attitude. He should be walking sex.
Thoros, Selyse and Shireen Not concerned with these roles, and don’t have any suggestions.
And, not listed above, but if they cast Val I’d love to see Rosamund Pike in the role.

This is good news, and I suppose it’s doable with A Storm of Swords broken into two seasons. I’m not sure how organic it’ll all feel, but it’s one way to make the story feel fuller for season 3, while little of what we remember from A Storm of Swords is likely to happen before season 4.
I just have one request of D&D, for season 4. Assuming they wait until then to introduce Oberyn, I hope they also introduce Quentyn at the same time, maybe just as a contrast. I really felt he was introduced too late to the party in the books, considering events in Mereen. This could help connect some cliques and conspiracies to Essos again in the minds of the viewers.

Rosamund Pike for Val is perfect. I would also vote Anna Torv but she still has a season of Fringe left. Imogen Poots from Centurion would be good, or Sarah from Chuck.
Glad to see your a Siann fan as well. I swear to God I am going to be that Paul guy and get Siann for that role! I would also be open to Vanessa Redgrave. But I doubt we would get her. Francesca Annis would be good too if they cast her a little younger.
John Hawkes as Mance is inspired! I wonder how good his British accent is.
And since they are casting Selyse, I wager to give some story to Stannis by having him bickering with his Queen (Davos, Me, Stannis, Selyse what a crowd!) I am pushing for Gillian Anderson. Just give her some peachfuzz on her upper lip.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
So, Daario…
TBH though we had rumors he was being cast for awhile, I’m not really sure I get why he’s being cast for S3.
D&D have hinted that Dany’s story in S3 will end with the sacking of Astapor/stealing the Unsullied. Does this mean they are moving Daario to Astapor? To me… this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense unless they are changing his origin/role entirely. Where would a sellsword captain fit in? Or maybe I’m wrong and Dracarys will not be her finale in Season 3. *shrug*

I would love for Gleeson or Hinds to be cast in Thrones!
I see both more in the Mace Tyrell role, but they could be worked in elsewhere….
Sian Phillips as QoT would be awesome indeed. I fear Smith is too wry and haughty for Thrones…. even if those traits make her perfect for the role! XD
I love John Hawkes! One of the more underrated actors out there.
He would be fun as Vargo Hoat, but I doubt he will be cast at all since he’s American.

I hate to be a wet blanket but I’m curious how they’re going to insert the Reed twins.

Yes Vincent Cassel would be awesome as Hoat. Plus being non-English he could get away with the lisp unlike other actors. Sian Phillips would be fabulous , but there has to be a scad of older actresses available that could make the QoT delicious. Dench would also be wonderful , but maybe too prominent at the moment ? ..I never watched Lost ,but I know Fionnula Flanagan is a very fine actress..
But I mean , look how we all fell in love with the dear departed Old Nan…I have confidence they’ll be able to come up with someone who’ll knock our socks off.

While I am a huge fan of the John Hawkes idea, my intial hope was Frain. Someone else, don’t remember who, but someone from this site mentioned Hawkes in response to my explanation of the Frain suggestion (both incredibly talented actors who can blend in or stand out as needed, which to me is key to Mance) and he completely fit in with my sense of Mance. So to be fair, while it is an inspired casting, the credit belongs to another poster. Either way I would be happy dancing like Patchface if either were to be cast.

I think it will be relatively easy to get them together. Maybe Meera/Jojen were on their way to Winterfell but arrived too late, instead meeting up with Bran in the forest. Or maybe Jojen’s greensight guides them.
In any event, I just hope they recite their pledge. It may be even more poignant in the show, as Bran will hear it after he’s been betrayed and had nearly everything taken from him. We swear it by ice and fire!
The inclusion of the Reeds is a monstrously good decision.

The only reason I give a damn about the Reeds is because of Howland. All Meera and Jojen are good for is telling the story about the knight of the laughing tree. Not only is it very fantastical, but it is also fairly boring at times.

Hmm, well, the Reeds were sent to Winterfell to find Bran (and Rickon). So, umm, when they get there later than they do in the book (perhaps the TV Reeds are just slow, or stopped for a bite on the way), they see Winterfell burned down (Jojen: I knew it!) and track the children north, eventually catching up with them, because you know, Bran has to be carried.
That’s one of many completely plausible ideas. Another, as someone mentioned, is green dreams.
It’s really not that hard to solve these things if you think about it. Aside from death, there aren’t many plot variances where you can’t get back to the story easily. We saw it all season.
AlanQuote Reply
Prince of Winterfell,
There was an interview quite awhile ago where they say that there are two big events which are their favorites in the entire series and that both will occur in Season 3. The hints they gave indicated that these events were tRW and Dracarys. I’d have to look it up by googling same as you.
The rest is speculation – given that they are aiming Season 3 to center around these two events, I assume that they intend to end the series with them. And to me it makes the most sense that if they are going to do tRW, it can’t be the season finale. Dracarys makes much more sense as a final event - a badass/awesome moment to make up for the horrible one earlier. Plus, they line up chronologically.
In any case it’s the most logical stopping point for her. I don’t think there’s another good place to end Dany’s story until she takes Meereen, and if they do that in Season 3, then there’s nothing left for S4.
Lol if you hate him that much, you should want him to be pushed back to Season 4… :)
I think he’ll be a different character than in the books, in that he won’t be such a clown and will be much more relatable as a result. He’ll be sort of like Jaime, or a really hot Bronn, or something. What I’m confused about is how introducing him before Astapor will actually work. Dany should NEED those unsullied – why steal them if she already has a sell-sword captain and his crew behind her? Which makes me think that he won’t be a sellsword captain in the series.

Bran just isn’t going to be on screen a lot pretty much ever again. It’s actually really good the Reeds are in because over TWO seasons Bran has:
- A reintro scene, maybe, they split up and head out
- A couple of scenes about Summer, max
- The scene at Queenscrown (?) where Summer helps out Jon
- The Liddles and Norrys, if you are stretching it
- Maybe two scenes for the Castle, Sam and Coldhands
I’m digging deep here and that’s like seven scenes, most of which have no action. That’s like Jaime this season, EXCEPT it’d be over two seasons. And you can’t move Dance up — because there will be nothing there then.
So adding in the Reeds, which add at least three scenes incremental Intro/pledge, green dreams and frog stabbin’, and the Knight of the Laughing tree at least gets us to a Bran scene every other episode. Still might have to make something up, but much better.

Casting like this or — as much as I like him — Nathan Fillion as Butterbumps just confuse me. Do people really want to the show to do something goofy?
I do think they will change Daario, and I think there’s pretty good book justification to do so. I think the perception of Daario even being that sexy is a result of Dany’s POV — not a collective view. Frankly, the preening and such would annoy most women over the age of 25, which Dany, is of course, not.
I’d like it if they actually made him less of an ass, just simply so I don’t have to watch him. And no naked women on the daggers.
AlanQuote Reply
It’s really only 64 minutes runtime, according to the HBO schedule. Every episode has several minutes of review of the previous week and a short preview of the episode. It’s still 10 minutes longer, but the usual episode runtime is only about 54 minutes.

Who needs Mace Tyrell? He can be played off-stage. Now, Lady Olenna, that’s the Tyrell we were looking for!
If Jojen and Meera are finally in, maybe those flashbacks from AGOT with Howland Reed and Ned Stark could show up sometime. Might shed some light for Jon Snow, considering where they went together.
The Blackfish was always one of my favorite minor characters, and it was bugging the hell out of me how they could cut him out after GRRM so significantly got him out of Riverrun in AFFC. “I swear it by earth and water,” said the boy in green.
“I swear it by bronze and iron,” his sister said.
“We swear it by ice and fire,” they finished together.

This list just makes me kinda…I mean, if it wasn’t from EW, I wouldn’t believe it whatsoever. It sounds almost like fan service. So many of these characters have roles that could easily be taken up by other characters, or are generally unnecessary. As much as I love the Reeds, they could have fucked around with Osha’s character and made her take up their mantle. And both of them — why both? And the Blackfish? Why does Margaery need a scheming grandmother if she herself is scheming in the show?
Someone share their insights with me.
But, I suppose they’re in — not doubting that, obviously. My only theory — and this theory seems to be shared by many of you, as I can see — is that these people are all important in the end-game, and need to be cast now. Interesting, how this may bode for the books.

It’s easily the best show on tv and the best actors want the best roles, even if they are not making much more than scale. It still pays more than theater.

Many people simply like the character. He’s strong-willed. Something happened between him and his brother, Hoster, which caused the Blackfish to leave Riverrun (many believe it part of an intimation that he is gay and refused to marry at his Lord brother’s command). Most importantly, he didn’t just sudddenly drop out of sight in the books, never to reappear. Instead GRRM gave him a rather obvious and daring escape which seems ti indicate importance for a later plot.

The perfect man for playing Edmure is Max Brown from Tudors. And about Oleanna, yes Maggie Smith…it would be dream come true, Fiona Shaw as Selyse, make it happen, I hated her for her Petunia in Harry Potter, and she would be great as abnoxious Selyse… Cant wait for season 3!!!

There are neither spoiler nor preview tags for some reason.

If they split the book into two seasons, what will be the S3 finale? Red Wedding alone would be too cruel, Purple Wedding has two come one or two weeks later.
Arya witnessing Beric’s resurrection and being captured by the Hound would work, but is maybe not strong enough. NW’s return to Craster’s Keep and Sam meeting Coldhands could be shuffled around to help in that case.

Finally! The Reeds!!!
Perhaps the reason Reek is not mentioned is that he has already been cast?! :D
LouisaQuote Reply
My suggestion for Theon in Season 3:
He is captured by the Bolton troops led by unseen Ramsay in S2E10. Then, in the beginning of Season 3 a servant named Reek helps him to escape. Together, they head towards the Ironborn troops on the West Coast. On the journey, Theon tells him the truth of Stark kids and some other relevant information. Soon after that, the Bolton troops find them “by chance”, Reek betrays Theon and it is revealed he really is Ramsay. This way, the Boltons will get all the relevant information they got in the books via Ramsay/Reek. (OK, of course Ramsay could have tortured the truths out of Theon but I suppose the Boltons want to do the torture in Dreadfort and it’s a long way from Winterfell, so the planned escape would be faster way – and of course a kind of method of mental torture too…)

Sounds good, but there’s already a lot of actual book material to juggle for the next few seasons. If they feel the need to absolutely feature all the actors each season, then your method is a solid approach. I’m just not sure it’s worth cutting out anything else for.

And despite any larger, overall issues with the show, she was really good in True Blood last season. I was just rewatching Season 4 and her performance is a standout.
darquemode,
As much as this would be awesome, because Henry Cavill is absolutely gorgeous to look at, I don’t think he could be Daario. I think Daario is supposed to be a lot more wily/smooth than Henry usually plays (he’s generally more stoic/heroic) and he doesn’t have the right look. He’s also going to be way too huge once Superman hits, I wager.

That’s an interesting choice, but I don’t personally think singing skill is necessary for this role. His singing voice can be dubbed, and he may not even sing all that often. Plus for all we know Julian Richings can sing like an angel.
Acting skill and look are the number one priority, and personally while Boyd is a fine actor, he’s too “cute”.

I always pictured Tom as being cute. Between his looks and his voice, women line up for him. While looks are important for many characters, I don’t see why Tom’s looks are all that important. And the only minstral the show had so far I wouldn’t give a single copper to hear him sing. I can usually tell dubbed singing and it annoys me when producers go for looks over someone who actually has the talent to sing. If Julian Richings can sing then by all means sign him up. I just know Billy Boyd can and he is a great actor.
The Rains of Castamere has been introduced to the audience, the meaning behind the song will have to be explained. Arya would be a good fit to ask those questions after hearing the song considering she just left Tywin’s service and wouldn’t be familiar with the song.
I guess Ros could do it while she is banging a Lannister soldier. :p

Holy Hell, Josh Parker, what’s with those humongous spoilers??? Someone please edit that post.
D&D have to be the most responsive showrunners ever. They have been unbelievably sensitive to fans’ feedback. Gah. How lucky were we that they snagged this project? First everyone bitched and moaned about no battles and not enough direwolves, and ‘lo and behold, both issues got addressed bigtime in S2. Then all the complaining about left out characters, and now we have this big announcement. Those guys are the BEST.
I love that Oscar Isaac suggestion. Not only does he have the look, but he’s a terrific actor. Any inclusion of the following would be superfine with me: John Hawkes, Ciaran Hinds, Andrew Scott, or Steven Waddington (for Edmure). But those are all long shots. Frankly, I think bringing back Momoa for Daario would be crazy good (and another television first). The fans would go apeshit, and they could easily change his look enough to fit that role.
I’m pretty flexible with all the casting and plot changes. I have a lot of faith in this show’s creators, and they’ve been too full of win for me to doubt their choices.
But they have to find a way to get Maggie Smith for the Queen of Thorns. I mentioned elsethread that she told Julian Fellowes that S3 of Downton Abbey will be her last, and she’s asked to have her character written out. So, snagging her for GoT is not as far-fetched as some might think. Seriously. Go back and read some of the QoT dialogue. I swear GRRM had her in mind when he wrote that part. That’s the only casting I really, really want to happen. What a coup that would be!
