After A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin wants to write more stories set in Westeros

George R.R. Martin says he will write more stories set in “the world of Westeros,” but it is “unlikely” he will ever again attempt a seven-book series. Perhaps one of those is enough?

As has been common over the past couple of days, Martin made these remarks in the comments section of an unrelated post on his NotABlog. After he discussed his progress on The Winds of Winter yesterday, it seems like the dam broke and he’s answering questions left and right. In this case, the question was not actually about A Song of Ice and Fire, but whether Martin would consider writing another fantasy series with a medieval theme after he finishes ASOIAFwhenever that may be.

Wrote Martin:

"I will likely write more stories set in the world of Westeros after ICE & FIRE. Dunk and Egg, for starts. Will I ever attempt another seven-book megaseries set in an entirely different fantasy world? Unlikely.I have other stories I want to tell too. SF as well as fantasy. More Wild Cards, more Thousand Worlds."

Now, we fans take it as gospel that when Game of Thrones ends on HBO, there will be a spinoff series of some sort. After all, it’s the second decade of the 21st century, and that’s how the entertainment business is rolling. But the promise of spinoff books, or at least short novellas, set in the world of Westeros is not a thing that everyone takes for granted. So it’s wonderful to know we could get stories like that.

Personally, I’m hoping for stories about Robert’s Rebellion, but Dunk and Egg is good, too. I’m sure there are fans who want stories about the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of Dragons, or a deep dive into the Doom of Old Valyria. There’s just so much material…what stories would you like Martin to tackle after ASOIAF if done?
