Doctor Who: What Is Chasing Down the Doctor?
By David Hill
During the course of his adventures on Doctor Who, the Doctor has made quite a few allies. Given his desire to help save the universe, and protect those who cannot protect themselves, it is understandable that he is regarded as a savior to the multitudes, a hero that one can truly look upon and know that everything will work out now that they have arrived.
Naturally, when one has been around as long as the Doctor has, and has thwarted as many attempts to subdue other planets and races, he will have acquired quite a few enemies. We know about his ongoing battles with the Daleks and the Cybermen, as well as his feud with the Master; yet, there are quite a few other enemies that he has made along the way. In fact, there may even be enemies that the Doctor does not know about.

Perhaps one of those secret enemies is about to reveal themselves. During part of the Doctor Who Series Nine Preview at the San Diego Comic Con, Peter Capaldi had quite a few interesting statements. Yet, there was one segment, in particular, that stood out.
"“There’s something stalking him, that will make life less pleasant for him…There’s been lots of great moments, there are a couple of classic monsters that I’ve got to work with and one in particular in a very special way which will make you, um, have to think carefully about regeneration,” Capaldi said."
Well, this statement is certainly open to speculation. What classic monster would be stalking the Doctor, waiting all this time to make his life miserable? Well, it does seem that Davros may actually be returning this season, especially since we received a glimpse of a Dalek city during the official Doctor Who Series Nine trailer. Yet, it seems doubtful that Davros would have that much interest in his regenerations.
Instead, we may get to see an old nemesis for the Doctor, one who has not reared their head yet in the new incarnation of Doctor Who. Could it be that Morbius is set to return, seeking out the Doctor to drain him of regenerations in his own quest for immortality, while furthering his plan of conquest?
Or could this mean the return of the Valeyard? He was after the Doctor’s regenerations at one point in time, and there is a connection between both characters. If the Valeyard truly is the darker side of the Doctor made flesh, and Series Nine is promising a darker tone, it may be the perfect time for such a return.
Whoever or whatever it is that is stalking the Doctor will certainly make for a fascinating story for Series Nine of Doctor Who. September never felt so far away as it does right now.
