A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stars tease a much more 'difficult' season 2

2026 kicked off on a high note with the release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO’s newest Game of Thrones prequel series following the adventures of Ser Duncan “Dunk” the tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire, Aegon “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell). The comedic, fun nature of the series, paired with the endearing unlikely duo in the leads, makes for fantastic television. It’s a big departure from the original series, based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books, but showrunner Ira Parker and crew have proved they know what they’re doing.

The success of the first season, which aired from January to February of this year, makes the wait for the second season all the more difficult. Because of the smaller scale of the series, with seasons that consist of six episodes each, HBO is able to produce new seasons annually, instead of the usual two-year wait we get with House of the Dragon. It’s been confirmed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will premiere in the first half of 2027, and now, the stars are giving us a new tease.

Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell talk filming AKOTSK season 2

At the 2026 Emmy Awards, Claffey and Ansell walked the red carpet, where he shared what they could about season 2. While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, the actors confirmed filming is completed, and reflected on the “difficult” experience they had filming.

“Season 2 is finally finished,” Claffey stated. “It was the difficult, the trickiest second album. There’s a lot of things that went against us with sets and weather and stuff like that. [Ansell] was amazing in it. Better than he was in the first one, and I didn’t know that was going to be possible.”

Ansell agreed with his co-star, adding, “It’s definitely been the most challenging but rewarding project I’ve ever done.”

If you’ve been keeping up with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms updates, you’re probably not surprised to hear how difficult filming for season 2 was. As we previously reported, production had to be put on a brief pause when one of their locations on Canary Islands in Spain experienced a historic flood. Because of this, the team had to relocate and pick back up in a different location in Gran Canaria. Fortunately, the mishaps didn’t delay production too much, and the series is still set to return early next year as planned.

This July, Ira Parker got candid on his experience filming season 2, calling it a “f**king bastard.”

“Season one was so hard. So totally hard,” Parker recalled. “The speed at which we had to shoot these things and how quickly we had to move around. It felt more like an indie film, or even a student film, than it did a Game of Thrones production. Then came season two, and it is somehow 10 times harder. This has been a brutal, brutal season. The biggest part has been this weather. We had to go somewhere for some heat and dryness because Book Two takes place in a drought.”

And, of course, it turned out that the location they chose to film the drought faced flooding. “There’s been so much stopping and starting that it’s been hard to get into a real cadence,” Parker added.

Not only was production tougher this time around because of unforeseen circumstances, but Claffey previously touched on how “isolating” the experience was because of where the script puts his character.

“It feels a little bit more difficult for some reason,” Claffey told Variety. “It’s like Dunk spends a lot of time on his own, it’s been a little bit isolating at times."

Despite the challenging production, the cast and crew still have great things to say about the second season, getting us hyped for what’s to come. After leaving Ashford Meadow in the season 1 finale, Dunk and Egg will travel to the Reach to serve for Ser Eustace Osgrey (Peter Mullan). The second season is based on the second novella in the Tales of Dunk and Egg series, “The Sworn Sword.”

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is nominated for multiple Emmy Awards at tonight’s ceremony, including Outstanding Drama Series. The prequel is already an Emmy winner, having taken home the award for Outstanding Stunt Performance at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier this month.
