It's hard to believe, but the end of House of the Dragon season 3 is upon us. HBO's series about the downfall of House Targaryen has been a compelling return to the world of Game of Thrones, plunging viewers into the darkest depths of the Dance of the Dragons civil war. Now begins our long wait for the show's fourth and final season.
House of the Dragon isn't the only Game of Thrones project to make a splash this year, though. And fortunately, even though the first ever spinoff for George R.R. Martin's legendary fantasy television franchise is slated to end with season 4, there have never been more ways to enjoy the Seven Kingdoms on screen — or stage.
Now's as good a time as any to take stock of all the spinoffs currently in the works for Westeros, so we can begin making plans for our next adventure. Here are all 4 currently confirmed spinoff works of Game of Thrones, including a few that you can watch already.
1. Game of Thrones: The Mad King
Our first entry isn't a television show or movie, but hear me out. Game of Thrones: The Mad King is the brand new stage play from the Royal Shakespeare Company, which made its world debut on August 8 in Stratford-upon-Avon in the UK. And while this isn't part of the interconnected universe of HBO shows, it does provide crucial lore and story reveals that have had the A Song of Ice and Fire fandom buzzing.
The Mad King is all about Robert's Rebellion, and the grand tourney at Harrenhal which preceded it where so much of the drama that sparked that civil war took place. It features towering figures from Game of Thrones lore like Rhaegar Targaryen, Lyanna Stark, Elia Martell, Ashara Dayne, Ned and Brandon Stark, Robert Baratheon, Jaime and Cersei Lannister, and of course, the Mad King himself, Aerys Targaryen. Some of the play's secrets came directly from George R.R. Martin, while other parts have been fleshed out in adaptation just like the TV shows. It's already vastly expanding the fandom's understanding of how the civil war that put Robert Baratheon on the Iron Throne truly happened.
The RSC's current season of Game of Thrones: The Mad King runs until September 5 at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. While that makes it less accessible to fans in other parts of the world, it's still worth keeping the play on your radar either way. Considering the overwhelmingly positive early impressions it's garnered, I'd guess it's only a matter of time until its run expands, or a pro-shot video of it is produced to record this historic show.
2. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2
Following the success of House of the Dragon, HBO launched a second Thrones prequel spinoff: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This series launched its first season earlier this year, and was received with resounding enthusiasm. Set roughly 90 years before Game of Thrones, this dramedy gives us the smallfolk's view of Westeros through the eyes of the fledgeling hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his diminutive, mouthy bald squire, Egg. It's based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, which are bite-sized, standalone stories in Westeros that follow the duo from one adventure to the next.
Filming is beginning to wrap for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, which is expected to premiere on HBO and HBO Max sometime in early 2027. It's likely that HBO will greenlight a third season, which would follow in 2028, as the company has been striving to keep this a yearly series.
3. House of the Dragon season 4
House of the Dragon is the spinoff that started it all, a generational Shakespearean tragedy set in Westeros that proved to both HBO and audiences that Game of Thrones had legs as an on-screen franchise beyond the initial series. This prequel is set roughly 200 years before the original show, and if you're reading this, the chances are good you know all about the horrific Targaryen civil war it explores, which leads to the death of the dragons and downfall of the mightiest dynasty in Westeros' history.
House of the Dragon ends with a bang in its season 3 finale, capping off an immense season of television that featured massive battles, shocking betrayals, dangerous political scheming, and a descent into unhinged darkness for its protagonist that will haunt us through the two-year wait for new episodes.
This series is currently planned to end with its fourth season, which should bring the Dance of the Dragons to a bitter, satisfying end.
4. Aegon's Conquest
The final spinoff we know for a fact is happening is also the most recently announced. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed it is developing a movie about Aegon's Conquest, when the titular Conqueror and his two sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, brought six of the Seven Kingdoms together under the Iron Throne and created Westeros as we know it. This story features some utterly iconic and important events in the history of George R.R. Martin's fantasy world, along with three of its most renowned dragons: Balerion the Black Dread, Meraxes, and Vhagar.
Yes, the very same Vhagar that Aemond Targaryen rides in House of the Dragon. During the Conquest she's ridden by Visenya, whose temperament is every bit as fierce as her dragon's.
Just last week, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed new information about Aegon's Conquest: it will be a theatrical release, and it will premiere sometime after 2027. If I were a betting man, I'd expect to see it in 2029, pushed as the next new Game of Thrones spinoff after House of the Dragon ends.
