A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 set photos reveal Dunk's beautiful new shield and Coldmoat Castle

Ser Duncan the Tall is looking much better than the last time we saw him after the trial of seven.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms wrapped filming on its second season this past August, which puts it right on schedule to premiere in the first half of 2027. After more than half a decade of slogging through prestige television shows taking two years or more between seasons, it's beyond refreshing to have a fun adventure tale falling back into a regular yearly schedule. We'll be riding with Dunk and Egg before we know it!

While the end of filming is obviously fantastic news, that doesn't mean things have been all quiet for our stalwart hedge knight. Earlier this month actors Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell — that would be Dunk and Egg themselves — attended the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, where A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was up for Outstanding Drama Series along with eight other awards for its stellar first season. It didn't bring home the big prize, but it did cinch an Emmy for Outstanding Stunt Performance for the epic trial of seven, which feels extremely well warranted.

What tidings will we get next from the wanderings of our hedge knight and his squire? This week, it's a surprise drop of leaked set photos taken at the Canary Islands in Spain during the season 2 shoot. These come courtesy of the premiere Spanish Thrones fansite Los Siete Reinos, who obtained them exclusively from photographer Piotr Drezinski.

Our first and most exciting images features Dunk standing on a mountain:

Dunk will have a stunning new shield in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2

The two big things that jump immediately out at me about this image are that Dunk is now sporting longer hair — which we already knew, since Claffey has been making the press rounds with his more luscious locks for months now — and that he's got a new shield. Dunk's iconic tree and star shield that Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford) painted for him was destroyed during the trial of seven; he'll need a new one if he's to keep serving effectively as a knight.

The shield Dunk sported in season 1 was an incredibly close match to how it was described in the book. This new shield is a different take on the elm tree and star, but I think it works beautifully. Javi Marcos at Los Siete Reinos compares it to the White Tree of Gondor from The Lord of the Rings, and I can't help but agree. Dunk could do a lot worse, as tree motifs to call to mind go.

As for where he is here, this image was taken during the show's filming on Gran Canaria island in Spain earlier this year. That location was largely used as a stand-in for the drought-stricken Reach, where the majority of season 2 will take place. My money's there.

The Red Widow's castle of Coldmoat revealed

Los Siete Reinos also has another very intriguing image, this one of the front of a castle set that was constructed at La Fortaleza de Ansite, a beautiful mountainous area located near the Las Tirajanas Ravine on Gran Canaria. This set was constructed sometime in late April; it has since been taken down, but photographic evidence remains. Los Siete Reinos confirms it is the set for the castle of Coldmoat, which is ruled over by a major new character being introduced in season 2: Lady Rohanne Webber, a.k.a. the Red Widow.

Played by Bohemian Rhapsody star Lucy Boynton, Lady Rohanne is a fan-favorite character from the Dunk and Egg novellas. In "The Sworn Sword," which forms the basis for this season, Dunk gets caught up in a land dispute between Lady Rohanne and Ser Eustace Osgrey (Peter Mullan), an aging knight who Dunk has sworn to serve for a time. Rohanne earned her nickname by outliving multiple husbands. She's had to defend her rights as the Lady of Coldmoat against suitors over the years, which means she's more than comfortable putting men on the back foot. That should give us plenty of fun scenes between her and Dunk, who struggles to talk to women just as much as he does nobles.

As for the castle set itself, it certainly does fit the bill. Above you can see a side-by-side of the set, with blue screen extensions that will be filled out by digital effects, next to a artist Mike S. Miller's rendition from The Sworn Sword graphic novel.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is currently in post-production, and will premiere sometime in 2027. Until then, our watch continues for more news and updates about HBO's newest Game of Thrones spinoff show.
