Dunk and Egg's adventure in the deserts of Dorne is coming more into focus, and it will likely include a formidable new character who didn't appear in the book.

It's a high time for Westeros on screen, with new seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon both in varying levels of production, while the first Game of Thrones movie, Aegon's Conquest, has finally locked in a release date. It's safe to say that in the coming years, we'll be spending more time in the Seven Kingdoms than ever before.

The next Thrones spinoff that we'll be watching is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, which wrapped up filming in the late summer and is slated to premiere sometime in the first half of 2027. And while we can make plenty of reasonable guesses about what to expect based off the season's source material — "The Sworn Sword," which is the second Tales of Dunk and Egg novella by George R.R. Martin — there's reason to think there are going to be a few major surprises in store as well.

Now, we have an idea of one of them: new details about scenes set in Dorne, which did not appear in "The Sworn Sword."

Two different Dornish settings revealed for AKOTSK season 2

The scoop on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' Dorne scenes comes courtesy of premiere Spanish Game of Thrones fansite Los Siete Reinos. Last week, they revealed some intriguing set photos taken during the show's shoot on the Canary Islands in Spain. While the Canary Islands were largely used as a stand-in for the drought-stricken landscape of the Reach, which is the primary setting for season 2, the production also filmed scenes for Dorne there.

Los Siete Reinos learned of two different Dorne scenes that were filmed. The first scoop only contained the real-world filming location: the Convent of the Dominicans, which is a beautiful structure in Teror on the isle of Gran Canaria. Even at a glance, it's easy to imagine how this building and its grounds would call to mind a luxurious castle somewhere in Dorne; it reminds me a lot of the Water Gardens setting from Game of Thrones, which was filmed at Alcázar of Seville in Seville, Spain.

Then comes the even more intriguing part: the other scene Los Siete Reinos learned of was filmed in the village of Fataga, featured over 150 extras, and "stood in for a bustling Dornish market." This scene included a conversation between Dunk and Egg, a dancer dressed as a bird-woman, and a merchant who tried to sell our leading duo some gigantic watermelons.

The inclusion of dialogue in the marketplace scene is notable, because it hints that we may get to see a bit more of Dunk and Egg in Dorne than we did in the book. Taken together with other pieces of behind-the-scenes information we've gotten in recent months, these two new locations paint a very intriguing picture indeed.

George R.R. Martin's unpublished pages and Dorne

"The Sworn Sword" picks up roughly a year and a half after the first Dunk and Egg novella, "The Hedge Knight," which formed the basis for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1. By then, Ser Duncan the Tall and his loyal squire Egg have taken up service with an aging landed knight named Ser Eustace Osgrey at his castle of Standfast in the Reach. However, we do get some hints at what Dunk and Egg were up to during the missing time. Namely, they went to Dorne in search of Tanselle, the puppeteer who Dunk defended at Ashford Meadow after she was attacked by the sadistic Aerion Targaryen. They also made a brief stop in Oldtown, where they visited with Egg's older brother Maester Aemon (yes, that Maester Aemon).

Showrunner Ira Parker revealed over the summer that season 2 includes some unpublished pages that were given to him by George R.R. Martin, "actual written prose" which didn't make it into his Dunk and Egg novellas. In a separate interview, he also hinted that we would see Dunk and Egg's previously unseen adventures in Dorne in the show, but noted that, "How much of that we cover, I'll leave up to people to tune in for Season 2."

Lady Vaith will reportedly appear in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2

One of the most important things that happens to them there is that they stay with an old noblewoman named Lady Vaith at her castle (also named Vaith). This Lady Vaith, who is in fact one of the former mistresses of Aegon IV Targaryen, has gone quite mad by the time she encounters the hedge knight and his squire. In "The Sworn Sword," we learn that Dunk accidentally offended her, and the pair were forced to flee the castle. This botched encounter with a noblewoman informs Dunk's apprehension when he has to face another one in the novella itself — Lady Rohanne Webber, the Red Widow of Coldmoat.

All this is summed up in a scant few lines of dialogue in the final novella, but an enterprising fan who visited the Cushing Library at Texas A&M University — which houses many of George R.R. Martin's early drafts of his work — came across a pre-publication version of "The Sworn Sword" that included a bit more about this encounter with Lady Vaith. They shared their findings on Reddit.

According to this fan, there's an extra sentence in this earlier version of "The Sworn Sword" which reads: “They had lingered at Vaith longer than they meant to, before finally making an escape," and that several lines later, when it came time for Dunk and Egg to leave, “A poleboat had taken them down the Greenblood to Planky Town."

So we know from Martin's papers at the Cushing Library that there was originally a bit more about Dunk and Egg's encounter with Lady Vaith. Now, here comes another piece to the puzzle: according to the reliable scoop site Redanian Intelligence, Lady Vaith has been cast for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2. She'll be played by veteran actress Kathryn Hunter, who has appeared in a number of productions over the years, including a recent, excellent turn in Star Wars: Andor as Syril Karn's overbearing mother.

While we have to take any sort of casting scoop with a grain of salt until there's an official announcement, when you look at all these pieces of evidence together, it paints a fairly strong case. Given everything we've learned, it's seeming increasingly likely that the unpublished material Martin shared may in fact have depicted some of Dunk and Egg's misadventures in Dorne, from the markets of trading hubs like the Plankytown to the deceptively dangerous halls of Castle Vaith.

As we draw ever closer to the 2027 premiere date for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 the mystery of this never-before-seen material from Martin is becoming one of the more intriguing aspects of the show's sophomore season. I'm looking forward to seeing how Parker and his team incorporate it, and what new perspectives it will give us on Dunk and Egg's time together.
