Nonso Anozie was recently interviewed by Blackfilm, in anticipation of his upcoming film The Grey, however he also dishes on Game of Thrones and his role as Xaro Xhoan Daxos. The full interview is embedded below, the Thrones stuff starts at 6:04.
Winter Is Coming: Nonso is an engaging and well-spoken guy. Glad to have him on the show! It sounds like they have beefed up Dany’s storyline quite a bit and expanded the role of XXD in the process. I’m very excited to see how it all plays out!

I think it makes sense to expand the Qarth storyline. I liked the one in the book, but about 90% of it happens in Dany’s head. That doesn’t translate well to screen. Everything after Vaes Tolorro is mostly introspection. So I think it’ll be the general general plot, just less passively conveyed.
I wish that Bran’s storyline were getting that same treatment instead of just being shelved :(
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I really really like this actor and I’m super excited to see him in the show. I just really hope they don’t, er, straighten him out. I actually like XXD, I’m fond of that fey backstabber, and I hope they keep the character largely the same, just give him more mystery and arcing.

I love the way he pronounces Xaro Xhoan Daxos, good to hear they’ve beefed up the Qarth storyline, some of which from the books might not have translated all that well to the screen. Can’t wait to see his performance.

The stuff about the early part of ACOK being “packed with days of Daenerys wondering” at the beauty of Qarth and nothing happening etc made me laugh, because it’s true. It’s a little slow at that point, sounds like they’ve made it a lot more exciting. And I love his voice!

Good stuff! I think many non-bookreaders expect a lot from the Dany storyline now that the OMFGDragons!!1 are born. Many probably just expects her to launch an attack on Kings landing in season 2. Little do they know….

I really hope Bran’s storyline is indeed bigger than we have been led to believe. His chapters are always among my favourite and it is sad to think the overtly fantastic element they offer is being sidelined. I wonder how it will be recaptured.
Still, I’m loving Qarth, and I soooooo cannot wait to see it in all its glory. Nonso was so diplomatic with his shift from “boring” to “introspection”…he looks super! A perfect XXD!

It will interesting to see how they expand this story line. There is one concern I have about adding new content though. With only 10 episodes and an even bigger book to cover than season 1, how do they find room for new content without having to cut excessively from the books content in other areas?

Very interested to see! Xaro should be a much more fascinating character than he’s allowed to be in the book with such a charismatic actor playing him! So, yay.
I kinda disagree with the idea that Dany’s aCoK chapters are “boring.” Yeah there’s a lot of description and introspection in Qarth, but there’s plenty of political machination too. The weird thing about how GRRM tells that stuff, is that most of it is offscreen in Dany’s case. E.g., we hear about her having seen the pureborn after the fact, etc. But the best thing about the TV adaptation is that they can SHOW not TELL the opulent descriptions (and looking at the making of video that’s exactly what they are doing), and instead of us hearing about Dany doing things in her thoughts after they fact they can SHOW her doing them too. Same goes for character interactions like the Jorah/Dany stuff – the actors have demonstrated already that they can show a lot of the undercurrents going on without anyone vocalizing their ~feelings or actually doing anything that doesn’t happen in the books.
So anyway I think they won’t actually change much that happens, it’s just that they’ll make it medium-appropriate.
SO EXCITED.

I was just reading Xaro Xhoan Daxos’ profile on Tower of the Hand, because I really couldn’t remember who he is or what his deal is.
After reading it, it seems like a pretty minor part in the scope of the series. I wonder why HBO/David/Dan decided to beef this character up. I’m sure it has a purpose and sets up the motivations of the major players, all the while giving Dany something to do and someone to talk to.
Any other ideas/predictions?
HollyoakQuote Reply
There’s nothing more I would rather see than Jay Mamao come back so that other story lines can be squished aside. The best part of season 1 after all were the rape scenes, imho. I imagine like suddenly out of nowhere a zombie Mamao comes out bangs his chest and rapes Dany (I mean, it’s questionable about the rape) and then… I don’t know… cut to something else. Then in later episodes Irri or Jirri or whatever the sex slaves are called can teach Dany the arts of pleasing your dead but abusive ex-husband.

I think it’s unanimously agreed about making Dany (and her plot) less boring now that all the sex and violence is out of her life.

I think they have not made a decision that all x are y, etc. I mean, that would be a little bit weird. Though I know a lot of gritty fantasy fans absolutely need to know what skin color this one or that one is in order to have the whole thing still make logical sense.
Epic knows nothingQuote Reply
Well, he is definitely a minor character in the context of the overall series, but for Dany in aCoK he is pretty much the main person she interacts with in Qarth. So I think the reasoning here is less about beefing up XXD (who will be left behind when Dany moves on next season and not recur for a long long time), and more about (as you rightly suggest) beefing up Dany and giving her more to do. She is pretty much our leading lady after all.
In practice I imagine this will simply mean more showing of events described as having happened in the books, but not witnessed. After how reverently D&D handled the first season I’m not anticipating any major changes.

Why? It barely works in the book; it’s totally disconnected and meaningless; it doesn’t do what the book assumes; to develop Dany into a character of deeper complexity. Instead it gives her a complex.
It’s as if GRRM wrote a short story 25 years earlier and left unfinished, and he asked his personal assistant to paste it into the novel to give Dany something, anything in her storyline.
As a live action scene it’s a money pit and for nothing. Better use that money for The Squirmish of Darkpuddle.

I’d say it is pretty safe bet that most people would assume or already know that Dany is going to be looking to build an army. And the fact that she ends up in Qarth has been revealed in a couple season two promos already.
Giving the basic setup of a character’s arc for the season isn’t really a spoiler, it is something that all TV shows do. If someone is that upset by this type of teasing or low-level spoiling, then they should probably be on a media blackout for the show, as any news (trailers, interviews, casting) could potentially spoil the basic storyline for them.

Interesting comments. I love the idea of beefing up the story there, and adding the intrigue and drama of King’s Landing. Many of Dany’s chapters feel somewhat aimless in ACOK compared to AGOT, and obviously the show writers had to make changes in order to create compelling television.
minor spoilers of ACOK:
In many ways, Dany’s time in Qarth is a courtship process. Many people including Xaro ask for her hand in marriage while she asks for help in re-taking the Iron Throne. We’ll also get another glimpse of Dany’s opposition to slavery and how that hurts her standing among ruling classes

I trust D&D, but I think it would have been better for the show, at least as far as the story is concerned, if Dany’s story line had been expanded with parts from Book 3 than with completely new material. Season 3 will be difficult enough to film as it is.

I can definitely agree with giving her more to do in season two, considering she had a huge presence in the first season, and her storyline in the book is a lot of introspection that doesn’t translate to screen; although, I’m not sure what to think about making it “action packed”.

An actor discussing his role as a S2 character, I’d think it would be expected that you would get some new information. Common sense. The “spoiler” was extremely vague, no more spoiling than what you might see in one of the 30-second trailers. If you don’t want to hear even the vaguest spoiler, than don’t watch videos that discuss S2 and have things like “the expansion of the Qarth storyline” in the headline. Just my two cents.
Ours is the FuryQuote Reply
I agree that Dany’s introspection wouldn’t really translate well to the screen. So long as they do a good job I’m happy for them to add more intrigue to the Qarth storyline. In fact, if it’s done respectfully and not at the expense of telling the rest of the story then then I’d love for there to be original content in the second season.
NinepennyQuote Reply
I don’t see the expansion of the Qarth storyline as a change so much as it is a clarification of points made in the books which tended to get lost in all the other things going on in Qarth and elsewhere. The political intrigues in Qarth are there in the books, they are just less evident. What D&D seem to intend is to bring the political intrigues to the forefront, making them as important in Qarth as they are in Westeros, with many people vying for Dany, her inheritance and especially her dragons. It’s all political. It balances things with what is going on in the West.
To avoid confusion they have also likely condensed the roles of the Thirteen and other leaders into the person of Xaro Xhoan Daxos. Having Quaithe and Pyat Pree and then 13 merchant princes might be a bit too much. So the Thirteen becomes the One. We’ll see about Pyat Pree and Quaithe. I expect the same might happen when the plot moves on in future season, especially in the towns in AFFC and ADWD.
As far as changes go, I’m okay with this one. And Nonzo Anozie seems to be a great addition to the cast.

I forgot about that addition. Actually presents a solid body to be the political foe of Xaro Xhoan Daxos instead of just the nebulous Spice Guild of Qarth which never really had a clear representative in the books.
LangkardQuote Reply
In my mind the Qarth (and later Meereen) are very important for Daenerys, because she has so many disappointments on her journey and this is one of the reasons for her story “downfall” in aDwD. Finally I love that Danys storyline is untypical and she haven’t “to many” victories, this make her way to Westeros much more interesting. (And I think most of the readers/watchers guess she will arrive Westeros alive, so the question isn’t ‘whether’ but ‘how’).
So, I’m very happy about ‘Expanding Qarth’. In the Books most of the story happens in Danys Mind or in short verbal reports. But I’m unsure about House of the Undying and the visions, if we only see one or two of her visions, it’s like a cheap trick, but we can’t see ‘too much’ because so TV don’t work.

What book series have you been reading and how did you end up on this site? The whole series is PACKED with speculation fuel. Some might even say that it was one of the primary causes of it’s popularity, as every plot element is forshadowed in many different places (not just in the house of the undying), but gets lost in the sea of red herring descriptions.
That is to say, every time you start getting bored at the detail gone into about some odd set of facts, one of them is likely going to be pertinent later to the plot.
Like the list of the descriptions of the practices of the whores in Arya’s and Sam’s chapters of Feast for Crows. I’ll lay money that one of them ends up being important later to the plot.

What a wonderful person! So bold and frank to call something boring, well, boring. I already love the guy.
I would n’t mind some extended version of the story in Qarth, as somebody already said, there is nothing wrong in giving Dany something more to do while obviously they can’t borrow staff from SoS because there’s not much – at least for the personality that CoK-Dany has.
It’s a great opportunity to set up things for SoS-Dany, develop her character and add some action, the story really needs it over there.
The only bad thing that happens when extending is making room against other story parts. The Reeds and the Tullys, I’m afraid, are the victims of such extensions. These absences make me sad but not so worried because I highly trust that D&D will wrap up the story beautifully.
Great cast addition. Go Nonsie!
Kael of the LakeQuote Reply
As always with any changes and additions, I say: I am happy enough with them, as long as the characters remain, well, in-character, the scenes could happen and possibly have happened in the books (the “deleted scenes” approach, (c)Winter) and do not change the major points and the direction of the overall narrative (gods forbid). The Qarth storyline needs to be told a bit differently to satisfy the TV medium in the show, don’t tell fashion. I got the impression that the expansion will definitely include events referred to or at least hinted at in the books, so all is good. Besides, the added scenes in the first season were, as a rule, strongly written, in my opinion.
Hear Me RoarQuote Reply
I agree. As long as it’s something similar (not so much changing things but adding onto things only mentioned in the background and adding to what we already know), I’m fine. I thought the first season was excellent in that regard too. It’s mostly what was left out that irked me.

I agree. The scenes added in S1 were not only written well but did solid character building. Like the dialogues between Varys and LF, Tyrion and Tywinn, ect. Dany is going to need these in S2 to show her ability to rule, her queen qualities if you will.

Yeah I think the materialfeom the books they leave out of the show is going to really increase from this point on. man i just came here to say i just realized balon swann isn’t going to be in this season, which sucks since he wasn’t a major but prominent character in the book
this is straight from his wiki on awoiaf.wikia.com, his role in ACOK
Ser Balon takes part in the Tourney for King Joffrey’s 13th Name Day, unhorsing Morros Slynt in the second tilt of the day.
He supports King Joffrey I in King’s Landing, whereas his brother successively serves the kings Renly I and Stannis I. During a dinner given by Lady Tanda Stokeworth, Lord Gyles Rosby raises his glass “at the health of the kings,” and Ser Balon Swann replies that three glasses would be needed (King Joffrey and his two uncles, Stannis and Renly, both of whom claim the crown). The joke is meant to raise the spirits of the guests, but Lord Varys reports it to Tyrion Lannister, current Hand of the King. Tyrion decides not to follow up on it as he states Ser Balon just made a harmless jest.
Ser Balon is among the party that sees Princess Myrcella off to Dorne. He survives the riot when the party was attacked by a raging mob.
Ser Balon is chosen for the Kingsguard by the Queen Cersei to replace Ser Preston Greenfield, who dies in the riot. Tyrion approves of the choice. He fights bravely during the Battle of the Blackwater, where he leads Lannister forces alongside Tyrion Lannister. After the battle, Ser Balon and the other remaining Kingsguard spend hours knighting more than six hundred men.
