HBO Asia’s Game of Thrones Facebook page has uploaded six new photos to their season two gallery. Well, technically, two of them are not new, as they are a part of EW’s gallery. However, the other four are all-new and give us glimpses of Shae, Gendry, Varys, and Sam in season two.
And a bonus new image of Sansa Stark, from the HBO.com homepage.

No, Gendry doesn’t look good. i don’t buy him as someone who has worked as a blacksmith for years. It was much argued in nineteenth century evolutionary science whether blacksmith’s sons are born with big shoulders because they inherit them from their fathers, i.e. can acquired physical traits be inherited? That actor was never a blacksmith. He needs to look beefier.

They showed Gendry sleeveless in Season 1, he’s pretty jacked. Also, he’s not a blacksmith’s son – he’s Robert’s son.

First I learn that they recast Gregor Cleagane to someone who does not even remotely resemble him, and now I beleive they recast Gendry [he looks really different!] and Loras [his hair!].. and from the trailers, both Renly and Daenerys have lines that seem really forced and poorly executed.. I now have VERY poor expectations for season 2..

Gendry looks like a younger Ewan McGregor, it’s crazy how much he looks like him in this picture. The pictures look great!

Gendry looks great! Like a young Baratheon! And this may sound crazy, because it usually works the other way around, but I think Joe Dempsie actually looks younger now that he’s all messied up and unkempt. Maybe not as young as book Gendry, but younger than he did in S1.
I love Shae’s dress. This is more of the style I pictured for Margaery actually – loose and easy draped floral dresses.
Maisie looks like a little boy! I mean, she’s still an adorable girl, but the costume/makeup/hair team did a fantastic job! Much better than the wig in Ep10 last year!
Aimee Richardson looks so pretty in that Myrcella picture. I saw the pictures of Tommen too, and I’m glad these two are getting some play. Myrcella looks like such a sweet girl, a great contrast to what Lena has shown so far for S2!
The lighting in the Sansa picture is perfect…look at Sophie’s eyes!

That picture of Gendry has the “Baratheon” look that I always envisioned from the books. The blue eyes, the dark hair, the handsome face.
In the book, Arya didn’t seem much interested in Gendry, probably because she was 11 or so, and puberty hadn’t hit yet. But wow, that’s one hot looking Gendry with a beautiful, affectionate smile. I wonder how they are going to play it out in the show?
Myrcella looks like a beautiful Flemish painting, and Maisie, wow, those eyes, if anything that short hair makes her more striking..

Seconded. Finn Jones is still playing Loras and is in some interview footage in the Renly character profile. That is definitely still Joe Dempsie as Gendry.
If you can’t buy this guy as a Blacksmiths apprentice then I don’t think you’re going to cope well with there being dragons in this show.

I give you an 8/10. Good trolling, but you need practice.
Anyways, cool pictures. But I’m still not buying that everyone believes Arya to be a boy. She clearly looked like a female in the scene between her and Hot Pie in the final episode of Season 1. I’m optimistic that Maisie will be able to make it work, and have some more masculine body language.

Agree about Gendry, if Robert looked like that when he’d just won the war I can believe Cersei would have fancied the pants off him. FWIW, based on the books I got the impression she was happy to be marrying him (‘love’ is too strong a term, she didn’t know him yet) up until he called her Lyanna.

I don’t know what the big stink is regarding the Gendry/Arya age difference. It’s not like she’s in love with him.. (yet I hope).. in the books she has an attraction to him as a protector/confidant.. what have you.. there’s just something there for her and in turn Gendry wants to keep her safe and enjoys her company. He’s kind of a loner, but Arya is different and he likes to be around her.. even when she annoys him. The age difference is no big deal.. it’s just the beginnings of a crush on Arya’s part and Gendry just likes to hang out with her. It’s all innocent.
Is it too soon to pre-order season 2?

While technically he should be Gendry Waters in reality he’s not Gendry anything.
You only get a Bastard surname if at least one of your parents is a Noble and said parent has acknowledged you as their offspring and allows you to use the Surname.
Mya Stone gets to use Stone as Robert ackowledged her as his child when she was a baby and must have let her mother give her the surname Stone.
In Gendrys case AFAWK he was never refered to as Gendry Waters as a child ( he certainly never refers to himself as Waters) and has no idea his father was a Noble (never mind King) .
So either Robert did not ackowledge Gendry as a baby or Gendrys mother did not want people to know the father was a Noble and did not give Gendry a Surname.

Yep. I was almost positive Kaya was going to be Marg, and I don’t even like Kaya. She can pull off looking devious and innocent both, and she’s a lot younger-seeming. I mean, I don’t mind Natalie, but she seems a little too old. Maybe it’s how she carries herself, but Margaery’s a dang kid, practically.
For the younger roles, I actually would expect them to leech more and more actors from Skins, except that it looks like there’s going to be this huge final reunion series coming up. So there goes my Nick Hoult as Ramsey idea, and Luke Pasqualino as Quentyn Martell, and all the other fifty ones I had…
(I was a huge fan back in the day, okay.)
Dempsie is freaking BANGING as Gendry, though, and I’m out of my mind waiting for how well Hannah Murray does Gilly. (I hope she pulls out some Skins Cassie when she’s at it.)

Is it a case closed situation with the dark haired baby Cersei lost? It nags me to no end that someone may have swapped that dark haired baby out and Gendry is the true son of Robert/Cersei. I can’t recall any definitive death to Robert’s lost dark haired baby.
MimsyQuote Reply
That has some huge, somewhat frightening implications if it’s true. It means that endgame, Gendry is the true heir to the throne – and I don’t think that’s what George is going for in the books, unless he knows something we don’t…
Then again, I always pay strict attention to the changes in the show, because I feel like as we move on some of them might hint towards stuff George hasn’t written yet. That is, if the show and the books are working towards the same ending.
Pink DragonQuote Reply
Pink Dragon,
Wouldn’t that be an awesome twist though? I really don’t want Gendry to be King, because it kinda sucks to be royalty, but I want him to be a legitimate heir to Storms End so the Baratheon tree can grow once more. The Starks and Baratheon’s make a solid team and it would be a shame to lose that ally.
Thanks for your input!

Mimsy,
Depends on how things are going with the show. Cersei is devious- maybe (in show-canon) everything she said is true (except praying for Bran’s recovery!). Or perhaps she was simply lying. Or it’s an exaggeration of events in the books where Robert got her pregnant and Jaime arranged for her to have an abortion. Maybe in the show- (this is probably not true, theory only!)- she took something to induce a miscarriage that didn’t work, but did cause enough damage that the child died soon after birth. Or perhaps she simply killed it outright. She loves her children by Jaime because she considers them reflections of herself, perhaps she doesn’t even count Robert’s child as ‘hers’.
ShinyteapotQuote Reply
There was no black haired Cersei/Robert baby in the books though, not even one that GRRM has kept hidden so far.
Cersei believes in Maggy the Frogs prophecy and that prophecy stated Cersei would have three children. If Cersei had already had four children then surely Cersei would no longer believe in the Prophecy.
MormegilQuote Reply
Oh, yeah, I know, the second paragraph was just how I feel about these sorts of changes/theories in general. Until ADwD came out, I thought for sure Pycelle’s weird I’m Not Really That Frail thing meant something down the line for the books, too, i.e. George told them to slip it in early.
Pink DragonQuote Reply
Mimsy,
Oh, yeah, it would be awesome. The Baratheons are my homeboys and I count myself as one of Robert’s bastards. ;) He’s my one true king.
Pink DragonQuote Reply
Shinyteapot,
Cersei couldn’t have known it wasn’t Jaime’s baby until the shock of black hair at the birth and then maybe played it off as a sickly baby? Hmm.. maybe she wasn’t evil enough to kill the baby and secretly gave it to another? Wasn’t Gendry’s description of his mother as blonde? Let’s say if the woman he knew as his “mother” wasn’t really biological, but the super blonde clue would lead us to believe he could be linked to Cersei?
I don’t know what to make of Gendry’s situation, but those darn little clues either in the show or in the books lead me to Robert/Cersei and a hidden plot. I just don’t know.. aside from what I WANT to be true! :)

That’s absurd. She loves her children because she loves her children like any mother would. She doesn’t only love them because they look like Jaime – she loves them because they are children born with the man that she wanted to be with, children that she chose to have.
On the other hand, she loathes Robert’s “contributions” because they are children born of rape and abuse. She cannot disconnect them from her (totally legitimate) hateful feelings towards Robert. It’s tragic, but I’d challenge you to love the baby of your rapist as dearly as your true children. Most women choose Cersei’s path – it’s psychologically damaging (to all involved) to carry a child of rape to term, let alone try to pretend you can love it unconditionally after birth.
It would be interesting if in the show they make Gendry Cersei’s kid. I don’t think this is likely in the books – unless Cersei was lying to Ned.
userjQuote Reply
Totally. I know if I was paying a whore to pretend to love or even tolerate me, the very second she told me she would carve my eyes out of my head she’d be fired and out on her ass.
AdrianQuote Reply
userj,
Are you implying that Gendry would have been a product of rape? Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t Robert and Cersei cordial in the beginning of their marriage? I understand after a while it became a loathsome duty to be married to each other, but wasn’t Robert attentive in the beginning? I don’t think Cersei was all about Jaime’s kids from the get go.. until she started popping them out and having anything other than a “golden” baby would give her away.
MimsyQuote Reply
Mimsy,
In the TV show it’s possible they were cordial for some period of time. It’s rather unclear because later she tells Ned she despised him after he said Lyanna on their wedding night.
The books (especially a feast for crows) make it clear that Cersei hated him, and always had to be physically forced by Robert during sex. She never willingly allowed him to sleep with her after their wedding night.
So unless the child was conceived on Robert and Cersei’s wedding night, then yes, in my opinion he/she was a product of rape in Cersei’s mind (though not by the laws of Westeros where after all men can do whatever they want to their spouses, including kill them).
userjQuote Reply
userj,
It’s rather sad that these two had such a disastrous marriage. Too bad they couldn’t find a common ground like Ned and Catelyn and grow to love one another.
Thanks for the Cersei insight userj. I kind of take Cersei with a grain of salt, because if you aren’t on team Cersei, then you’re just against her. It was hard for me to empathize with her until Dance with Dragons.. but we’ll see what girlfriend has up her sleeve.

To all those pointing out the Gendry is not a blacksmith’s son, he’s Robert’s son, can I say this is what I find incredible about the casting. Before he took up kinging for a living, Robert swung a hammer professionally. He was too heavily-built to be much use with a sword. It’s by design not coincidence, that his son is also someone who delights in swinging a hammer. The essential quality they needed to cast for to make Gendry so startlingly like Robert that strangers would notice, is beefiness. The hair colour they could fix with dye. I appreciate that this actor has put in the hours in a gym and comes with a fan-club from his previous work, but he remains to slightly-built to be Robert’s son and to have been hammering metal for a hobby as well was a living. you can’t act physical heft.
Mostly the casting is perfect, but not this one.

I did feel much more sympathetic towards her after adwd as well – in fact Tyrion and Cersei are now so similar that I’m not sure who is worse.
That said, I personally don’t think that the fact that Cersei is a victim absolves her from being a horrible, awful, selfish, monstrous person herself. Indeed abuse victims often turn around and abuse others. I think Cersei’s motivations can be explained by her position in society but that in no way excuses her actions.

Alex,
I think you’re reading far too much into this. Should they cast to the ideal, purist version of what the character should be physically, or should they cast the best actor? The way you’re dwelling on this, I’d be surprised if you liked Sean Bean. Let’s be honest, he doesn’t look like a Stark at all. Also, Mark Addy wasn’t 6’6, Momoa was a little short, Kit, Emilia, Harry and Maisie’s eyes are entirely the wrong color, and Dinklage is just way too pretty.
By your logic, they should just re-cast the whole damn thing. What a shit job David, Dan and Nina did, honestly. ;)

Somehow even though she’s supposed to resemble a boy here, Maise looks a lot prettier than Sansa in their respective photos.
