This is the first time this year I’m contemplating not watching something Game of Thrones-related, maybe it’s better to wait? So soon!

Looking at the countdown clock gives me the required strength.
Are you gonna keep the episode count like this? So season 2 episode one is episode 11, season 2 episode 2 is episode 12?
Just so I don’t start to confuse things.

How awesome is it that they actually rendered one of the other dragons (could be either) in the top box even though it’s not the focus of the scene.

You can see it’s tail hanging from it’s cage. Hard to tell if it’s yellow or green. Could be either dragon.

I find myself joining the ranks of those who feel VERY shortchanged over the virtual exclusion of Valyrian steel in the show’s lore. Seriously, it can add so much to the show for so few resources! Think of all the non-sexual exposition and the wonder it would bring! You can spend a good ten minutes of runtime having a few choice characters talk about Valyria and its arcane marvels and tie it to this season’s investment in the dragons.

WHY WOULDN’T ROBB DEMAND THAT THE LANNISTERS RETURN ICE?!

The necks of the dragons seam longer this season – and no, that´s not a nit-pick I just find it interesting. – Maybe they a bit like swan babys? They necks are shorter when they are born and grow significant when they get older.

Yet, when Cersei sends them out, there’s five of them leaving … who’s the fifth one(the last one to leave, 1:15)? At first I thought it was a random Lannister guard, but it would seem strange, a guard being present at those meetings … neither does he look like a a member of the kingsguard.

That said however I would like to see the Sky Atlantic Thronecast interview with much of the cast, but it’s region locked to the UK and Ireland. I finally feel it in reverse! Is there anyone who can put it up on YouTube? Somehow I’ve rationalized seeing an interview with cast members as opposed to actual footage.

I watched them all. I have no willpower!

    On the Small Council clip,
I winced when Tyrion told Cersei all her decisions were foolish. While true, it strikes a chord with me because I’ve often felt like an idiot when I fail at something my brothers can do better (video games, baseball, politics). It made me really feel for Cersei at that moment, and chaffe at Tyrion’s obvious relish in her screw-ups. That scene portrays a very realistic brother-sister situation.

I am the averter of eyes. I am the coverer of ears. I am the one who covets no more
information, the resister of temptation, the one who simply scrolls down. I pledge my life and honor to the Brotherhood Without Previews, for this preview, and all the previews to come.

This is great. I remember someone wrote a BWP oath last year that was really good. Was that you? Is this the same one?

I am pledging. Not going to watch these.

    Skipjack,
I can’t upload it myself but I’ll let you know there isn’t much new footage in there, perhaps one quick flash. In terms of the interviews themselves, though, they’re pretty cool. A couple of quotes I thought were particularly interesting (which I’ll spoiler just in case):
Michelle Fairley, “There was one scene with Renly that involved a lot of special effects.”
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, [On what to look forward to] “Episode 7. My favourite scene I’ve ever filmed.”

As for these 6 new clips, I must admit I gave in. I reasoned to myself that I watched the 15 minute preview for Season 1, and this isn’t that bad. But anyway, everything just looks awesome. I can’t think of a single thing I’m worried about this season, everything just looks perfect. Craster’s Keep especially has been ripped right out of my mind.

Benniof and Weiss have said from here on out they won’t necessarily be sticking to the one-book-per-season format, and more just start telling the whole story so they’ll be shuffling around some of the stories a bit as they see fit, so I wonder if it’s the conversation between Jaime and Catelyn, before she sets him free with Brienne. I remember that conversation being pretty awesome.

    Johanna,

What you’re talking about comes much later, i.e. after the Battle of the Blackwater, which I believe will either be the last episode, or the 2nd to last episode of Season 2. All of these scenes are from the 1st episode of S2, so that’s a ways off. It’s been years since I’ve read Clash, but if I remember correctly, Joff is celebrating his name day when Tyrion returns to King’s Landing, after Tywin names him Hand of the King. I think we meet Dontos Hollard at that same tourney.

Well, imdb (I know, I know …) credits Clive Mantle (who plays The Greatjon) with only 3 first season episodes. He’s been cast in a comedy series called White Van Man on BBC for 2012. HOWEVER, wikipedia says he has an “ongoing” role as The Greatjon.

//aside// I find myself torn with imdb because imdb has Esmé Bianco (I love her) appearing as Ros (I hate her) in only 5 first season episodes. I’d love to see Esmé in another HBO series (and, let’s face it, we probably will) but I hope, with Ros, imdb is up-to-date and accurate but that it’s wrong with Mr. Mantle as The Greatjon. //end aside//

    Pete A.,

I read an interview previously where Emilia Clarke mentioned one of the hardest things for her was acting like there were dragons she was looking at – the inference I gathered from that interview was that they didn’t do the tennis-ball thing. Y can tell Clarke’s having a hard time acting like there is something there. Hopefully they’ll take these things into account for next season.

Other than that though, the clips look excellent. Man I hope Alan Taylor doesn’t bail on Season 3 and 4 due to his commitments to Thor 2.

Edit: I’ve seen Pepi note the same.

I think we see 7 separate figures in the room. There are only five people sat at the table when Tyrion enters. They are:

    1. Cersei
    2. Pycelle
    3. Varys
    4. Littlefinger
    5. Slynt

    6. Tyrion

At 1:09 we get a good wide shot of the room as silhouetted figures exit.

First out looks to be Varys due to the long sleeves. Slynt strides rapidly overtaking Pycelle to be second out despite being on the far side of the table. He is recognizable by his bald head and the helment tucked under his arm. Pycelle is third out recognizable by his robes and beard. Littlefinger rounds Cersei’s end of the table and looks likely to be fourth out, he is clearly visible in the light by Cersei. From Tyrion’s end of the table comes the last person. He is wearing a cape. He looks to be carrying a helm under his right arm. Probably a kingsguard, goldcloak or Lannister man-at-arms extra. Hopefully Mandon Moore but doubtful.

Clive Mantle has not been confirmed as appearing but equally he has not been confirmed as absent. Check the cast listing here on Winter is Coming which is still speculating that he will appear.

He was cast in White Van Man but I’m unclear when that shot and if it would have blanked his availability for the whole season.

I thought Elyes Gabel was going to give up his role as Rakharo due to his commitment to World War Z and was told several times that it had been confirmed that he would not be back. Today we see him in a promo clip. Mantle may yet return as the Greatjon for a limited number of episodes. Even if he is absent for this season it hardly precludes him returning later – have him leading a splinter force or the outriders for a season and reporting in by proxy. Who knows – we may get the silver lining of them casting the Smalljon!

Also not present for the reading of the terms are Mark Coney’s Galbart Glover and the featured extra playing Maege Mormont. Roose isn’t there either and we know they had Michael McElhatton on set playing him this season.

    Hello Lars,

Why be surprised? They have not mentioned any ancestral house swords in S1, nor have they named “ice”. So don’t expect to hear it referenced again.

The background story involving Ice should not be ignored, overlooked or eliminated. This is a sword of rare Valyrian steel that has been passed down from generation to generation in House Stark for thousands of years. As you know, it also has a greater meaning in the story further on down the road.

Without the TV series showing how important Ice is to the Stark family, or how rare and powerful Valyrian steel is. A significant void will be left out in the whole Westeros Mythology. Let alone the power and meaning behind Jaime giving “Oath Keeper” to Brienne, and having her swear she will search for and find Sansa Stark. That moment will be so weak to the TV viewer, if the background of Ice and Valyrian steel is left untouched.

Valyrian steel is like the classic Vorpal blade all AD&D players (fantasy dorks) long for, for their characters. It is such a cool element in the books and a fantasy role playing aspect lots of people enjoy. Also, Valyrian steel is like kryptonite to The Others because it is made from dragon fire and old lost magical spells. I think it deserves some attention from the TV series so later on the heroic feats and hacking off of limbs by warriors with these rare blades can be more easily explained.

If this makes any sense to say, if you follow my logic… It makes it a more believable fantasy element if a Jon Snow or Brienne (or any other warrior with a Valyrian steel weapon), hacks through 5 soldiers leaving corpses with severed heads and limbs behind them.

I didn’t say I saw anything shining I said he had his arm bent as though he was carrying something in the crook of his elbow. I also didn’t see a cup in the fifth man’s silhouette. Time code?

No identifiers but they are definitely not the first 5 mins of the episode because there are 2 involving Jon that are obviously non-consecutive.

I’m not saying otherwise. I fully expect him to be absent for the rest of the season, it was apparent from the casting of Michael Cole as Kovarro that they didn’t have Rakharo as much as they wanted him. I’m just glad they managed to schedule some shooting time with him and keep that continuity from the first season to the second. If he stated that he doesn’t want to return then they can have him die/disappear while scouting. If he is open to doing later seasons then have him delayed.

I cited him as an example of me being told someone was 100% confirmed not coming back and that being proven untrue at a later date. That stands.

Lord Commander Mormont had a lot of balls doing that, or he was just plan stupid. Or maybe he knows the intelligence of Ghost is great enough to know it was a little aggression among friends…

    Zach Z.,

They sure did. It’s just maddening how they’re half-assing lore that adds so much flavor to the books. The swords are prized, they embody an aspect of Valyria’s legacy that Westerosi nobility openly acknowledge and value. It’s a real shame the writers have skimmed over that so far, despite all they’ve accomplished with the show.

Also, not naming Ice and highlighting its importance to the Stark family dulls the tremendous irony of its use in Ned Stark’s execution.

    nightsbridge7,

Meh to that. It’s far from unreasonable. From what the web has gathered, the overall runtime of most episodes this season is a bit less than season one episodes, perhaps to save money for “Blackwater.” Furthermore, the logistics of having a few principle characters expound upon the storied nature of Valyrian steel is a good deal simpler than most conceivable scenes. You don’t need a new set, you don’t need new characters. Just a handful of people we like to hear talk and the Ice prop weapon. Tywin or one or more of his children would be perfect for this bit of exposition, with some mention of his dissatisfaction with the fact that the Lannisters have lacked a named blade since his brother lost it on his expedition.

For all the love I bear this series, it lacks some of the trappings and detail that make the books brilliant. The real sticking point for me as a can is knowing Valyrian steel is actually within the means and ability of the production to realize in the show. The hardest part is probably producing the weapons themselves. While it’s not vital to the plot, it carries weight with the lore and history of the world. I’m so glad the show has a cast that can help us believe in the world their characters live in, but what they carry is also important to our understanding of their world.

I totally agree with you. I also am a little disappointed that Robb didn’t demand the return of Ice. Not only is it important for the lore, it also gives the story a good way to explain some awesome hack and slash scenes that may be in the future for Jon Snow or Brienne or anyone with Valyrian steel as I already commented on here…

I don’t know if I agree with this… think about any other TV show you watch. If it was a character drama about say… golf, would you want them to spend several scenes describing the advantages/disadvantages of various golf clubs they use? I’m sorry but honestly I would change the channel.

Or a closer example. Let’s say you’re watching a gang/mafia show. They could have a scene where all the characters discuss the pros and cons of the various murder weapons they’ve used, e.g. how do different types of ammo work with different guns? It’s potentially informative, it adds “lore” that the characters would be aware of and the audience wasn’t, but… what doe sit add to the story? I’d argue nothing. People are going to get shot and die, or not die, as the story requires. They die or they don’t, whether the steel’s valyrian or not.

I do expect that they will in the future mention a valyrian steel blade again (remember they did it once – Jon recognized that longclaw was valyrian steel), but it should really only be done in passing like in that instance. For example, Brienne is given Oathkeeper and gasps in wonder, saying “Jaime, this is Valyrian steel”, Jaime laughs derisively and says “you wouldn’t be so impressed if you knew it was melted down from Ned Stark’s own blade and given to the likes of me.” In the example I gave, it’s still not the lore that’s important – it’s the connection to the character and the story.

And finally, even in game of thrones, would you really want them to spend hours discussing the different types of clothing they wear, and why? Or the food they eat in different circumstances? No! They can show that stuff, they don’t have to spend valuable screentime explaining it.
