That was brilliant!!!!!!!! When Melisandre said “death is coming for everyone and everything” as they closed in on Catelyn and Robb–arg, my poor heart. That trailer was crazy awesome! My only concern is that it seems that they replaced Tormund in Jon’s story leading up to the battle at the wall. I really hope that this doesn’t mean they are going to kill him in that battle instead of Styr, Magnar of Thenn. His relationship with Jon in ADWD is one of my favorites in the series and he is pretty integral in Jon’s development as a character and leader

Wow, HBO knows how to do it. And they did.
Strangely, once again, no Dragonstone except for that awesome shot. No Tyrells, No BwB. But that’s totally ok, I don’t mind being surprised.
Tormund climbing the wall was epic, so are the big dragons. Theon with a hood makes me cringe. We might see some fingers dropping… I think the producers want the viewers to feel really bad for him, contrary to season 2 where they were hoping only bad things for him.
I think Jon in the rain is Queenscrown episode.

As far as Tormund goes, when he pulls out his sword (Queenscrown man?) Orell is there. So I think Orell may replace Varamyr and Styr
Obvious=ship leaving Qarth
Looks like Rast will be the leader of the Mutiny
And lastly, my f avorite scene by far, and it rhymes with Meek

Johnny CampQuote Reply
Looks like Rast is going to be one of the main NW mutineers at Crasters.
Also looks like Tormund is going to be taking the Magnar of Thenn slot on the climbing of the Wall mission.
Orell is on the mission too and it looks like they’re going to show him warging if the eye whites shot is any indication.
Not sure where Cat and Robb are at the start with all the injured and dead men. Is that Riverrun?
Still don’t see any recognizable shots of Harrenhall in any of the footage supplied so far. I’m still maintaining the theory that it won’t be involved this season and all the Jaime/Brienne/Roose stuff will be at another location so they don’t need to explain or show the North taking it.
Not sure what that quick shot of the one person in the ominous woods is supposed to be about, or the shot afterwards following behind them with what looks like a mangled hand. It’s definitely not Jaime. Looks like it could be a female.

I suppose we all have our favorite lines, some more well known than others. One in particular that I think (and hope) I will hear (sometime this season) is this:

It was a rather poignant moment for me in the books and caps off a great moment in the story.
Can’t wait for S3!

MRR,
I’d guess the castle is intended to be Riverrun — which would mean they’ll be rearranging the geography of Jaime and Brienne’s journey a little bit, but would fit with how they’re apparently going to introduce the castle and the Tullys de novo this season given their absence earlier. Give the castle a big set-piece as the pair row past — I saw what looked like siege engines on top.

I hope the show runners do A Storm of Swords justice. Hopefully D&D just left the big scenes from the book as they are written in the book and only cut out dispensable material. I’m hoping since they’ve got 20 episodes (maybe more than 10 in season 4?) to work with, they can get the story on screen and fit in the majority of my favorite scenes.
Will Ygritte die this season I wonder? The castle everyone is asking about looks like Harrenhal. It looks like Brienne and Jaime in the boat. This would make sense as she takes him to meet Roose Bolton at Harrenhal in ASOS.

My gut instinct is that that was Dragonstone, but we’ve already seen a huge dragon in the background and I can’t imagine it looking…sloppy. It could be an awesome, if off-book Storm’s End. I’d be most excited if it was a tricked out Riverrun. I was surprised by the width of the Twins’ bridge and how all-out they went on the Eyrie, so why not?

There was an edited version of this trailer that aired during a commercial break. It’s not a second trailer, just a shorter version for airing on regular TV. There was, as far as I know, only one new shot. It showed Varys talking to Tyrion when he says “the revenge you want will be yours in time.”

Oh where to start… I’m like a child on Christmas morning. I actually have tears of excitement!:
Soo, music is awesome, and so glad they went mostly with Varys’s voice again, since he is awesome of course.
And the whole trailer is just epic. I guess the castle is either Dragonstone, since is already introduced to us, or, less likely, Storm’s End.
That scene with a hooded Theon, was great. That cross he is tied to… omg.
A BIG change that is coming: it seems Robb is going to Harrenahall this season. Those are for sure, Harrenhall’s exteriors. I guess, the Mountain killed most of it’s inhabitans, when he found out the King in the North was coming. But I wonder how will they time it, with Jaime’s story there…
Oh, that White Walker… def, the Sam the Slayer story. I looks chillingly great!
Orell warging is so weird and great, and Jon and Ygritte kissing, and she appears to be naked. The Queenscrown episode will be great, and is that it behind Orell and Tormund? That def seems a tower..
Oh and Bran is so big, and Beric’s sword catching fire was monumental; and Daenerys finally looks like a queen. And Drogon! epic. this is the word.
AdrianAegonQuote Reply
Also: I’m pretty sure that the “everyone is mine to torment!” line is a direct comeback to the line from the book when Tyrion says, “Sansa is no longer yours to torment.” I don’t think he had a comeback in the book, but I have to admit that that one is pretty badass.

It’s gotta be Davos being rowed in to shore on Dragonstone. The Brave Companions would have no need to row across God’s Eye Lake to Harrenhal when they could ride like in the book. Brienne was my least favorite character from season 2 but her storyline improves in the books and her help in Jaime’s evolution makes her actually useful. Season 2 she served no purpose other than to simply be introduced and put in charge of Jaime’s return to King’s Landing.
I am nerdgasming. That trailer just looked to contain epic scene after epic scene. I’m imagining Daenerys’ acquisition of The Unsullied and I cannot wait (hope) to see when she turns The Unsullied on Kraznys.
I had worries that they wouldn’t go through with cutting Jaime’s hand off but it looks like the worry was for nothing. It would be a travesty if that was changed.
In season 2, I thought they butchered The House of the Undying scene.
The cave scene with Ygritte and Jon…I wonder if she’ll die this season or early next season so they can build up Jon and her ‘love’ and end season 3 with him escaping from the Wildlings and getting back to the wall to warn his brothers of the night’s watch. It may be a very cool change to put Tormund in charge of leading the Wildling ascent over the wall.
Beric and the Hound’s fight was another of my fav. scenes from the book. I am pumped for that one.
Theon, gulp.
Jeoffrey’s gonna have some confrontation with Tywin in the show I bet. It happens in the books and it’s great to see that even the richest man in Westeros doesn’t intimidate Jeoffrey’s sadistic inner devil child. It looks like Tyrion is giving Tywin that whole ‘we both understand that this kid is The second coming of the Mad King and he needs to go.’
I will be interested to see how much of the Hound and Arya they show and how they play their relationship out in the show. I loved the dynamic in the books.

Great trailer. I am not a huge fan of the music but they never use that stuff in the show so I will deal. :)
One thing.
People exclaiming that Drogon looks very large may be a little fooled by the perspective on the shot. The camera follows right behind Drogon which, as he approaches the boat (Meraxes?), makes him look large in comparrison. I would expect the dragons to be large dog size this season.

ahhhh S3 looks like its moving fast! Queenscrown already?? Well I guess it makes sense if its nearer the end of the season…Wish they showed more Wolves, but the shot of Orell with his eyes rolled up – gives me hope for Jon learning about his Warg status.

Jentario,
I don’t think so. Riverrun is, well, on a river. The Dreadfort is land based like Winterfell, so that leaves Dragonstone (but I see no Dragon statues), Storms End or White Harbor. I was thinking we should have seen Storm’s End last season, so maybe they put something together. Damn it, I still have no idea. It’s a pretty problem! :-)

I think that’s why it’s Tormund and not the Magnar – they don’t have to do that bit, so they might as well leave it out and not have anyone die there, which would mean that the Husband of Bears will be in the show for a while yet. Hopefully.

I’m convinced that that’s a Dornish party at 42. It doesn’t look like a troupe of Sellswords to me as they are too similar to each other. Sellswords would be more diverse and individual. So true, there was no “Story” to the trailer, no structure or even thematic consistency. Just brief scenes of mildly disconcerting scenarios plastered onto a song that they thought would be fitting because of its mere association with Seven Devils, unclear fanservice to incite the impetuous and “LOL THERE ARE DRAGONS! WOW DROGON BE BIG! WOOOO!” scenes to incite the CGI-fappers.

Pure speculation but it does explain how Tormund can lead the raid south of the Wall and still survive.
Maybe once the Wildlings reach Castle Black their objective is to break the tunnel gate rather than climb the stairs to the top of the wall (are the stairs even shown in the show?). In that way Tormund might actually be able to make it back to North of the Wall and not die in the raid like Styr does.

And to all of you out there complaining, specifically
Let me just say that it’s very hard to create a “story” on the trailer of a show as big as this one. I mean, come on! This is not like those other shows out there that have a main cast of 4 or 5 actors. GOT is huge! There are so many stories being told here, and some of the characters haven’t even met each other yet. How do you guys suppose one would be able to connect them and create a “story” in a 60 second trailer? That’s what the show is for! Personally, I loved the trailer.

sorry but that’s pretty specious. they don’t have to connect all the story or even most of them. i certainly demanded no so such thing. nor am i even looking for a narrative trailer at all. for example, a good trailer has a theme. this one has none.
game of thrones has a history of brilliant trailers. this one falls well short of the standard the show itself established. i noted it before: there is clearly something up with the promotion of the show this year. it amazes me that some of you can look at the delays, the cringe-worthy poster and this utterly uninspired trailer and not see this.
in another thread, someone asked me why the general public is suspicious of genre fare. this is exactly why: the fans undiscerning, unconditional devotion to the material. no genre of art generates more fanaticism than this one. people at large just can’t trust that when we like something, it’s because it’s actually good, rather than merely belongs to something we worship.
qwertyQuote Reply
Given what is said by some of the characters it’s pretty obvious the theme is Revenge.
MormegilQuote Reply
Also … In all the histories and lore stuff, the contecpt artists introduced Storm’s End like this — with that huge circular tower in the middle. This doesn’t say much, but I don’t think they’d go that far from the concept. Especially since they used it on both, S1 and S2 blu-rays. The location itself is kinda similar, tho.
EDIT: Also, there’s a dot, that to me looks like a rock, flinged by a trebuchet (possibly the one on the tower) … Were there any castles under siege in ASoS? Can’t remember …

No, revenge is only spoken of by 2 parties and has no bearing on what the rest of the contributors’ lines imply. The trailer instead *tries* to thematically mash the scenes together to portray the idea that “everyone can be cruel and merciless given a chance and context”.
tl:dr The attempted theme is “Barbarity”. The “Storm of Swords”, remember fools?
Arthur’s MotherQuote Reply
Anna,
I am more and more convinced that it is Winterfell. If you look closely at the 0:13 mark you can see a stark banner and Catelyn says in the trailer: “Show them how it feels to lose what they love.”. I think she is saying it to Robb and is referring to Winterfell and all that is connected to it, especially Bran and Rickon.
I don’t see it as too strange that Robbs wants to go back and see for himself, what has been done to hes home, assuming that he is not that far away. And let’s not forget, that we are talking film not writing here. One of the principles of film making is “Show, don’t tell.”, meaning that it is way better to show Robbs and Catelyns reactions to the fall of Winterfell without much lines. The ruins of the castle are a great place for that.

For all those who think it’s Winterfell, wouldn’t Robb’s army have to march over the Frey’s bridge to get there? If you remember, in Season 2 Robb allowed Rooose Bolton to command Ramsay to take a force of men to Winterfell to secure it, so Robb wouldn’t have to go to Winterfell.
It’s not Winterfell. I don’t believe it’s Harrenhall either. Robb being at Harrenhall comes too close to Brienne/Jaime. Also, who could cut off Jaime’s hand?
I have a feeling it’s some town, village or somewhere in the Riverlands close to House Tully, hence why Catelyn is upset over it. (Also, I believe she is talking to the Blackfish as well)

Arthur’s Mother,
Slow down a bit, my friend (just to be clear, I used “friend” here just because I couldn’t think of a more appropriate means to address you, not to imply that you’re an actual friend). Your language is a little bit more offending than it should be. After all we’re just discussing here.
I feel I should clarify that I didn’t mean this trailer got me to support Dany. FYI, I’m not that shallow. I’ve been a supporter of Dany’s claim for years and I just happened to mention it here as well. Moreover, in the beginning, I was torn between Dany and Robb, and when the show was announced, I wasn’t sure if Emilia Clarke would be able to do Dany’s role justice. My comment was actually supposed to be a compliment for the actress- personally I think she’s done a great job thus far and I believe this season will be no different- rather than a reference to the Unsullied. Dany’s claim is the best one (though I still feel Robb’s claim was justified as well). That’s why I’ve been supporting her for years now, and Emilia Clarke’s portrayal of her only adds to that. That’s what “fully on her side” was supposed to mean.
As for the Shadow trailer from the 2nd season, I actually felt that was more “connected”, so to speak, just because there was that great quote from the book that they were able to use. I can’t think of any such a general and fitting quote from the 1st part of ASOS that they could’ve used. If you can, please refresh my memory.
Of course, you have the right to dislike the trailer and express that, just as I have the right to remark on it. That’s it. No need for words such as “fool” here. After all, you don’t know me at all. We’re not discussing each-other here, we’re discussing the show and the trailer.

While I am a huge fan of ASOIAF, I don’t support everything about it. For example, I didn’t exactly like the poster either, and I agree it’s unusual that a trailer should be released so late. But that doesn’t change my opinion on the trailer itself. I don’t think there should be a theme to it, though this trailer does point at revenge as its theme. Nevertheless, it was worth-the-wait for me, and just because you don’t like it or consider it unsatisfying, doesn’t mean all of us do. I think it gives a great glimpse to the upcoming season, and that’s what I wanted it to do in the first place.

Cool trailer, although I don’t think Drogon is much bigger. Maybe a bit, but since this can’t be more than a few weeks or so from season two’s ending — if not immediately after — it would be weird if he was suddenly the size of a horse. (Unless something in the books points to dragons being able to just jolt in size like that, I don’t remember.)
I think it’s simply the camera POV skewing it that way. We’re right behind him so he’s gonna seem larger. He looks great for TV show CGI, though.
I do wish there was more Bran. I understand he’s down there with Sansa and co. as the least favorite of the storylines, but I always liked the mystery and general weird shit surrounding him and his ‘crew’, heh.

This is clearly not the full trailer people. You can tell it’s been cut down from the full version that will most likely air this sunday as was orignally anounced. I really don’t like the strategy of hbo’s marketing team of game of thrones ever since they started re-uploading promo vids on youtube just to get more hits. First they had the 12 second teaser for this and I am betting that this is just a more meaty teaser. It’s smart for getting more hits and exposure but it also get’s rabid fans nervous when they see something like this that appears badly edited due to it being a shortened version.

Oh pardon me, miss. I wasn’t aware that I was addressing someone that supports the resident Mary Sue even after being fully exposed to her reliance on crutches, her tendency towards negligence, her naivety, her hypocrisy and her inherent inbred madness. One would think a book reader would have better sense than that.
Allow me to apologize for judging you as Emilia-starstruck, when I should have judged you instead as a fanatic of the rising Mad Queen. May Drogon and his afterbirth be gang-banged by siege weapons and their corpses be supper for the krakens.
As for the trailer, it’s not just about requiring some “amazing” book quote to act as the foundation of one’s trailer theme to illustrate some concept that makes a trailer great. It’s about proper pacing, structure, cross-references, its ability to stand as a conceptual message on its own merits instead of some haphazard collection of fast-cutting vaguely associated scenes interspersed with characters providing mildly threatening dialogue. Even the trailers for the First Season illustrated their own meanings better than this…Joffrey of a teaser.

It seems obvious that the reason they waited so long is because they wanted to put finished CGI into the trailer. The early ones were always very light on that before.

Awesome trailer! I love all the imagery, seeing the characters and hearing the dialog etc. But I find myself on agreement with some here about the choice of music. The reason people responded so viscerally to the “Seven Devils” trailer, was because the song was so powerful and epic, and truly connected the images with the emotions one felt while watching the trailer. Not so in this case, the song is quite anemic.

No, it’s either the Yunkish, Meereenese, (Astapor doesn’t have a cavalry, just the Unsullied) or, most likely, one of the free companies (with a Dothraki escort). It’d be great if they were Dornishmen, but it’s too soon.

I just had a horrible crackpot theory. But it would be a great added scene IMO.
We know that Hoster’s funeral is in ep3 as from the official pics and from this trailer we can see Robb and Catelyn are in what looks like Harrenhal.
What if Robb takes Harrenhal in ep1 or 2 and leaves Roose Bolton to hold the castle when he and Cat leave for Riverrun at the end of ep2. Jaime would surely be arriving in Harrenhal for ep3 and then he and Roose can have their scenes together.
But looking at the trailer (For the 100th time) I noticed that when I thought Cat was talking to Robb when she says “Show them how it feels to lose what they love” but look again it is not him. No long hair, no armored shoulder pads. That to me looks like the back of Roose Bolton. The fabric of the jumper and where the arms cut off seem to match his attire in season 2, plus he has very short hair.
What if Catelyn, just now learning of Bran and Rickon’s deaths and before leaving for Riverrun, in her grief gives her approval for Roose to do his thing to any Lannister men in Harrenhal etc…
Then what comes later would be shocking…
Here’s a pic for refernce. Notice the same colors and shine in the S2 pic on the right. http://i45.tinypic.com/34pjk2u.png

I have watched the trailer so many times now I think I finally have my predictions and reviews haha…
00:05 – 00:07 – Skalling the wall (AWESOMENESS) looks fantastically done!
00:09 – Dragonstone?
00:12 – 00:14 – Robb and Catelyn are at Harrenhal by the looks of it?
00:18 – Coldhands?! and I am sure they had long hair so maybe Benjen Stark is returning as cold hands?! its been predicted by people before? and I think it could be a really good and cool idea as their is a reference about Bran… I may be totally wrong though….. MY OTHER prediction is that it could be a clip of Lady Stoneheart? but because the hands were blue Im sticking with Coldhands
00:20 – Theon? After being given to Ramsay by the ironislanders?
00:30 – Wildlings and Mance on the fist?
00:36 – The funeral of Catelyns father?
00:40 – Just after the death of Morment? Its at craster and its the guy who was the rapist in season 1…. with blood on his hands ! Makes sense? Although I am sure it wasnt his character in the books that killed Morment?
00:43 – FOR A SPLIT second you see the wildlings with a man? Any ideas anyone! is this the moment maybe when… They test Jon snow before he runs back to the wall of the nightswatch? as its raining so surely they are closer… or is it near the shadow tower?
00:54 – I AM GOING to throw this in there…. ROBB Stark in armor… but is this the RW? or beginning of it? although he didnt have his armor on in the book…
YOUR THOUGHTS PEOPLE?! any other suggestions?

WINTER, as much as I don’t like to say this, you gotta get medieval on our asses …take down the more idiotic and insulting postings on the site because its starting to look like the kind of stuff you see on IMDb threads. There is a point to have arguments and discusions that spring from the subject matter of GoT and ASOIF, but some postings are just simple insults and attacks with no merit, rhyme or reason.
I’ve always liked this site, because even if there were heated debates, I’ve made some of those postings in the years I’ve been here myself, or silly ones (done those too), there was always a degree of civility that prevailed between all parties. At the end of the day we all know why we come here, we are bound through our love and passion for the novels and the show , regardless of our personal traits and characters. All our contacts and postings operated within that overarching environment.
But of late we are starting to get individuals here that have little or nothing to do with the books or the show, call them trolls, hangers-on or tourists (or maybe camp followers)! They come here only to insult, harrass and behave with disrespect. This thread was a clear example of that, as are others…
So WINTER, good luck to you mate, this is after all your site and I hope that you will come to the right decision one that takes into consideration the freedom of expression we all cherish but also a modicum of courtesy and civility.
PS The trailer really is awesome…it is good to see the number of viewings grow so fast!

Why does a trailer have to have a theme? Is that the number one rule in making a trailer? The purpose of a trailer is to excite people of the next season that’s coming and this one succeed as I read many comments of people who didn’t read the book.
And look at the seven devils trailers. It the same as this one. A number at the background that say something about the next season plus scenes of almost every main character is in there.
And there is a theme in this trailer. Almost every scene is about it:
- Death.
Every voice over is about that. And it suited as the theme of the next season. Even the lyrics of the song: http://www.songlyrics.com/ms-mr/bones-lyrics/
Personally I loved this trailer. It’s perfect as a first trailer of the season. Especially for season 3. Almost everything is a huge spoiler so they have to be careful what to put in the trailer. It’s important for a first trailer of the season of getting what the next season will be about. It’s clear, its death is coming. And important that we see almost every main character.
The next trailer can be focused more on 2 of 3 main characters that are the most important in the first couple of episodes.
My question is, if Robb is going to winterfell, how is this going to be in the show. because the main reason why he must win back the freys is because he wants to go to winterfell and they probably know at the end of season 2 that Robb is married.

i can’t help but put in my own 2 cents:
i think this trailer is epic and the song is actually a foreshadowing of season 3 and 4 in a way especially if you listen to the whole song and not just those 2 lines featured in the trailer.
i especially love the part when it says “these are hard times for dreamers”
because it’s true – season 3 will be an especially hard time for almost every one.
there’s also a line there about a boy with a broken soul and with a heart with a gaping hole – who comes up immediately in your head upon hearing that? someone who rhymes a lot perhaps :-)

Agreed with many of those who did like this trailer. I, too, do not believe a trailer needs a “theme” to be successful. It’s nice, sure, but we have now 2 seasons of GoT under our belt and it has become the third-most viewed HBO show in history. So the show has some real momentum behind it now, and signing GRRM to a long-term contract insures that, at the least, they want the man to let the HBO folks know exactly what’s planned for the last 2 books (he’ll finish Winds of Winter before HBO catches up, but I doubt it on Dream of Spring).
So the “what is all this” element is now gone. And for those of us who are fans of the books and the TV show there’s a lot we’re looking forward to seeing — and starting an ad with the badass Tormund Giantsbane climbing the Wall is pretty great. To me that visual is meant to draw people into the entirety of the ad, especially for the TV fans themselves, who are first going to look and say, “Who is this badass dude climbing The Wall? Why is he climbing The Wall? Wait…they’re climbing the FUCKING WALL???”
Moreover though I think the theme is in Iain Glen’s line: “There’s a beast inside every man…it stirs when you put a sword in its hand.” Now we get a lot of scenes of some pissed-off looking Robb and Cat, but really, the beasts that are stirring while these mini-Hamlet-esque melodramas are taking place in Westeros are the ones taking place outside of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s in those guys climbing the walls (and the blue-eyed beings that are even more of a threat than those guys), and it’s in that beast that is Danys Targaryen, who, yes, until now had 3 dragons and a small cadre of followers but no ship, no army and no means for taking over the kingdom. But that beast has that sword – she has an army now, as these establishing shots clearly show, and she’s got a ship, too. (A small ship, Khaleesi, but a ship nonetheless.)
Further to that we get real good shots of some other ‘beasts’ wielding swords – most notably that of a flaming sword of Beric Dondarrian, and in one version, Brienne with her sword, too.
So if any theme is there, I’d say it is that – the beasts that are rising, and represent that threat that only a few (Tyrion, Varys, Melisandre, and Jon Snow) understand, while those playing a smaller game – Robb and Cat most notably, but Jaime, Cersei, and a few others – have the “revenge” thing on their mind. None of which is worth a damn against a fearsome fire lady with 3 dragons or an army of the undead.
My last thought is just that those who use this and one poster as a reason to be “worried” about season 3 are really getting a bit too concerned too quickly.
Greatjon of SlumberQuote Reply
The trailer doesn’t need a theme but it could definitely could use some more exciting imagery then what they choose and give the trailer a little more bang to it especially since it is trending on the front page of youtube which is going to have a lot of people unfamiliar with show checking it out. There are some cool shots like the climbing the Wall, the flaming sword, Orell warging, the dragon and anything with Dany because she looks so good but I don’t really see it impressing someone unfamiliar with the show. It is an exciting trailer for us fans because anything with footage from S3 will excite us even just pictures of the cast.

Well done Ashley! It took me awhile to get those two pictures together as well, but yeah, it’s Dragonstone. I remember applauding Stannis’ map room last season, and I was vexed by the Idea that we can’t really see any dragons in the trailer shot. In the books, Dragonstone is supposed to be covered in dragons. Statues, Dragon Gargoyles, motifs on the wall, over the door, just everywhere. Granted we are looking at one and a half seconds of film, but as Ashley has shown, in profile it is clearly the same castle. Now I just want a closer look! :-)

My 2 cents – I like it even more than the Seven Devils trailer, even if it falls short of that one by the standard of thematic clarity. The three things I fantasized about seeing were all in there, including the dragon flying near the boat, Beric and the flaming sword, and Wildlings climbing the wall. Someone above commented it should have had more exciting imagery. I can’t imagine how it could have been more exciting, without spoiling major plot points. Music is perfect for me, as well.

I usually lurk but now that the flames have died down, I wanted to add my thoughts. I liked the trailer & it made me excited to see snippets of some of my favorite moments. Drogon flying around the ship was a highlight, as was the image of Tormund climbing up the wall. Happy to see those characters back, even though my heart is already breaking for some of them (that hooded scene gave me chills). I’m certainly anticipating this upcoming season even more after the trailer, if that’s even possible.
Without taking away from the potential epicness of S3, I did think the edits were a little choppy & HBO played a little fast & loose w/the “Revenge” theme. My spouse, who is a pretty smart & astute media consumer, watches (& re-watches) this show w/me because I’m a fangirl. When I showed him the trailer, his 1st reaction was “I have no idea what most of that meant.” After I went through the trailer & gave him spoiler-free versions of shots, he got more excited about it. As an avid (rabid? ok, rabid) fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the trailer. But I think it’s a fair criticism to say that a more linear-style trailer may hold equal or even greater appeal to the non-book-reader viewers of the show. I think it would be worthwhile for HBO to continue to attract those viewers, because if there’s one thing I think we all agree on here it’s that we want the show to grow & continue (hell, at this rate it may be the only way we get to the end).
DanielleQuote Reply
JamesL,
No it’s not. The person’s hair is lighter and shorter than Arya’s and they are wearing different clothes than she wore all of last season and in the trailer and pictures of S3. If it was a stunt double then he most closely resembles Theon.
Tyrion PimpslapQuote Reply
First off, does anyone else think that the trailer was worth the wait? I read a WIC post that talked about how the wait for the first trailer for Season 3 is the longest we’ve had for any other season, but this trailer was well put together, showing off HBO’s awesome production skills and the Game of Thrones team’s ability to write some really chilling lines, like Varys’s quips at the beginning and end of the trailer.
As to the first scene, I think this means we’re going to get even more of the natural beauty offered to us in Season 2 from the scenes North of the Wall, which should be plentiful, considering the way the POV’s have diverged: Jon is with the Wildlings; Sam is hiding behind his rock, and the rest of the Night’s Watch lies asleep at the top of the Fist of the First Men, about to receive a rather chilly surprise. Some things I’d like to see from this part of the world: Giants and mammoths, Val (Have you seen the actress’s photo on WIC? Wow…), and the undead snow bear on the Fist of the First Men.
However, my wildest fantasies were crushed into fine powder, which I then snorted like a drug addict the second I saw the next clip of what looks to be Tormund Giantsbane climbing a very large, very scary-looking Wall. The high has not yet worn off…
The next scene is a little confusing. At first glance, the castle in the background looks like Dragonstone, and there are two people in a boat rowing in the water around it. However, this is the same boat used by Brienne and Jaime at the end of Season 2, and the pair of seafarers looks oddly similar to them. I can’t remember either of them rowing by Dragonstone or any other castle, so I guess we’ll have to wait until we see the scene in full to figure it out.
Tywin approaches Joffrey on the throne dramatically, Robb and Catelyn sample the latest dead or dying bodies in an undefined castle (Probably Riverrun, but could it be the Crag?), and Jaime looks a little worse for wear with Qyburn looms creepily in the background, all while Catelyn’s line sends shivers down my spine. I can’t help but laugh, though, at Bran’s silly face when he shoots that arrow. Look at that scrunched up nose! He looks like he smells something funky, but considering how long it has been since he, Osha, Rickon, and Hodor have been near a bath, that’s a definite possibility. Also, who or what is he shooting at, and how? I don’t remember Bran being an especially accurate marksman from the first episode of Season 1, and that can’t have improved with the loss of his legs…
The next three clips made me need to change my underwear (If you catch my meaning…), and the way the music tied into each clip really made this trailer look, sound, and feel very professional. First, Beric lights his sword on fire. The scene where he and the Hound fight to the death is going to be amazing, and I can’t wait. Something walks in the woods at night, a White Walker unclenches its hand threateningly, and somehow Theon has made it all the way to the dungeons of the Dreadfort while still wearing the sack Dagmer Cleftjaw put on his head. I wonder if we are going to get a scene in which Ramsay tortures him, and I hope that, should Game of Thrones show that, they don’t have a scene in which Theon is emasculated or his little Iron man is flayed. Frankly, I think we’ve seen enough of Theon’s genitals to last several lifetimes, and I think that the sheer shock of seeing something that disgusting would turn a lot of possible viewers away from the show entirely.
Next, what looks to be a group of Wildlings running, an enormous number of Unsullied raising their shields in unison, and Emilia Clarke looking as good as ever. She looks rather pleased with herself, but the wall behind her looks exactly the same as the one surrounding Qarth. I was hoping to see some pyramids, but I can get over it pretty quickly, as we get our first glimpse of Orell the Skinchanger and Mance Rayder, the King Beyond the Wall. Anyone else a little creeped out by Mackenzie Crook’s eyes? Jon looks sad, Ygritte draws a bow (Presumably to shoot at Jon), and Beric and the Hound cross swords.
When Joffrey says this next line, it makes me want so much for his wedding to happen this season. Unfortunately, it seems it will have to wait until Season 4, but still…
We get a glimpse of Hoster Tully’s funeral, and Catelyn Stark doing what she does best: crying. Michelle Fairley has been great so far, and I think we won’t be disappointed. She almost makes me like Catelyn… Almost, but not quite…
Is anyone else extremely attracted to Jorah Mormont? Believe me, I love the ladies, but that man’s voice is going places. We get a glimpse of Jaime Lannister screaming, and I think we can all guess why that is happening…
The next few clips are short glimpses of characters and scenes, and include Arya, Tormund drawing his sword (Is this scene the one in which the old man is executed?), Jon, Sansa, Cersei, Robb and Talisa kissing passionately, and OUR FIRST VIEW OF A GROWING DRAGON. Drogon looks dangerous, and the fire in the next clip seems to point to the fact that it’s not just his appearance. This probably is Danaerys taking over Astapor.
Varys makes me shudder once more, and the Game of Thrones logo appears.
That was amazing.

will there still be a trailer releasing today?

I think the original date was the 25th and today’s the 24th. Also the date for the trailer isn’t up anymore on HBO On Demand’s schedule.

Season 2 episode 1 where Cersei slaps Joffrey. He’s ordered that the throne room be redecorated, he adds the fire etc….
Nick_ScryerQuote Reply
Danielle,
Joffrey was redecorating the throne room in The North Remembers, in that scene where Cersei bitch slaps him. He also put fire around the pillars.

Only thing you got wrong is Robb kissing Talisa passionately. The two kissing are Jon and Ygritte.

Partial confirmation we’ll have the Battle at the Fist? http://www.makinggameofthrones.com/production-diary/2013/2/19/season-3-wraps-on-a-frozen-mountain.html?cmpid=ABC794
I mean, in what other context could they lit up a man beyond the Wall? Mance does say something about the largest fire the North has ever seen, but even so…

Nezzer,
Then why did winteriscoming.net said it was Winterfell? It’s possible that’s Harrenhall, but winteriscoming.net is almost never wrong.
Tyrion Pimpslap,
That’s what I thought too, probably because something that will happen in season 4.
Danielle,
People that I know that didn’t read the books, were very exciting about it. The point about a trailer for shows like GOT (that are mysterieus) is not explaining what the season is about. It would be a shame if they knew what will happen. It’s about giving them a taste of images what will happen. (look at the trailers of the show LOST one of the most populair show in history).

kevin,
WiC probably didn’t know anything about that, it was just a guess they made right after the trailer was out. They have fixed it, though, now it says Harrenhal in their Tumblr. After comparing pictures of Harrenhal with the screencaps from the new trailer, I am 100% sure that’s Harrenhal.
Make the comparison yourself, look at the walls:

It’s Harrenhal. It was 1am when I was uploading those screencaps and I just tagged it with Winterfell because I saw Cat and Robb and didn’t actually look at the picture closely. It’s definitely Harrenhal. I changed the tag yesterday morning, actually.

Andrew,
The rider looks to be wearing clothes in the style of the Iron Isles. Seems to be a boy/young man. Doesn’t look like someone we’ve seen on the show before. We’ll have to wait to find out his identity, I guess – Which is rather Wexing.
Jacob_MQuote Reply
It’s definitely Harrenhal, or at least the same set:

Funny…Everyone complained about the raven intrusion into our world. Now this trailer has crappy and distracting 1990s style pop music in the background and no one complains about that!
I’ll just view it a few more times on mute.

I’m surprised so many people have a problem with the music. I find it hard to differentiate this from ‘Seven Devils’ by Florence and the Machine. In fact, when I first heard this new song I thought it was Florence. Yet everybody seemed to love the ‘Seven Devils’ trailer. I don’t see what this has to do with the terrible modern day/our world raven teaser.

Ok I may have started off with a weak argument. Intelligent discourse is not one of my strong points. Honestly, I loved the shots of the trailer. As a book reader, I am excited to see book 3 brought to life. However, I felt that the trailer lacked cohesion. Sue me.

I know I’m in a very small minority and I apologize in advance to those who will be disgusted by my opinion, but I watched it several times and I realize I don’t like it that much …
Ok, it’s definitely fun to dissect it and try to ascertain what and who we see at this or that particular second, but that’s pretty much it.
Plus, I find this choice of music very, very weird, it gives the trailer a cheap new-age perfume that would suit a bad teenage/vampire movie better. It totally kills the spirit of GoT in my mind.
I think “Chaos” is much more impressive, even if it shows a lot less.
But it must be me : I still am a fan of the “iron Throne” trailer for the first season (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhqRmcsWqac), which basically was done in the same fashion as “Chaos” : something almost theatrical, with this black background that forces you to focus on the characters only, and on what they say.

Loved the trailer, I hope they don’t release any more trailers after this one, it spoils too much, even for those who have read the books (yes, I know I can choose not to watch them, yet I can’t). Especially like the promise at the end which seems to play on the fact that we have to wait for our revenge (joffrey) a little while (a year) longer

Yeah I really hope we dont get like a trailer per week from now on !
I’d rather get just one more trailer midway through Mars and four of five new vlogs !

Here are my opinions on the new scenes and what they show-
0.06- Tormund Giantsbane climbs the wall.
0.09- Our first proper look at Dragonstone from sea. Unless that’s Brienne and Jaime in the boat and then I’d suggest Riverrun, but that’s sure not now I imagined it.
0.13- Robb and Catelyn discover raided villages on their way to Riverrun, or perhaps that’s Harrenhal which would mean a different route than in the books.
0.15- Jaime is led by the Brave Companions.
0.17- Beric Dondarrion lights his sword.
0.20- Theon Greyjoy is held captive for flaying by the Boltons.
0.21- Wildlings advance south of the wall.
0.23- Dany and the Unsullied.
0.26- Orell
0.30- Mance Rayder
0.32- The Hound battles Beric Donarrion.
0.36- Hoster Tully’s funeral at Riverrun.
0.40- Rast leaves Craster’s Keep after the murder of Jeor Mormont.
0.41- Jaime has his hand severed by the Brave Companions.0.42- Orell and Tormund
0.47- Drogon flies to the ship that is carrying Dany from Quarth to Astapor

While I have no problem with anachronistic music — in fact, in many cases, I prefer it (see The National/Djawadi Rains of Castamere compared to every weird medieval version on youtube), I can understand why people have issues with it.
That said, that song is not anything like 90s pop music — which was mostly things like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and the beginnings of hip hop as pop.
It’s a song strongly in the vein (if not as good) as Seven Devils from last year and I bet whoever chose it is kind of surprised that last year’s musical choice was so lauded and this one so disparaged.
As for the trailer in general, t’s not a perfect trailer, but it serves it purpose. I’m not sure there’s a lack of thematic cohesion so much as the theme is just “Game of Thrones is Awesome” which is vague.
I enjoyed it. It got me excited. Seems to be true for the vast majority. Feel free to dislike it or complain about your personal view of it — that’s your prerogative — but it’s somewhat ridiculous to apply that to “there’s something wrong with the production of the show” or any idea that this trailer is ineffective.

Yes, that theory is definitely a possibility but someone has to die climbing the Wall when it crumbles. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
