Interview

Lena Headey interviews Pedro Pascal for Hunger Magazine

Lena Headey and Pedro Pascal are featured in the latest issue of Hunger Magazine. In a refreshing twist from the usual interview, Lena poses questions to Game of Thrones newcomer Pedro about his character Oberyn Martell.

Accompanied by a playful picture, the pair joke about Pedro’s ass kissing after joining the show as a proper fan. It was his experience as a fan that prepared him for the inevitably massive reaction to his casting announcement, and calls the Red Viper the best part he’s ever played.

Thanks to Greenjones for the tip!

  • Hodor?
Edit: Yup. I can’t wait for season 4 so I can finally enjoy of all that badassery Pedro is teasing us with.

  • LOL If that pic is a spoiler, it’s the best & most innocuous one I’ve ever seen :D Nicely played, guys. Nicely played

  • Love when actors genuinely befriend each other on set and get along well, as these two have.

  • Hmmm, so Oberyn kissed Cersei’s ass… Well, well, well…

I thought it was the other way around.

-“And who were your favourite characters up until that point?”
    -“Not you.”

    LOL

    :(

  • I love Lena. She’s really made Cersei a much more alive, complex and more sympathetic character. And absolutely fun. I love that Cersei has a resting bitch face of like 100 but in real life Lena has the most chill, laid back demeanor ever.

  • Josh,

There was incredible wisdom at work in casting her. Lena was specifically picked for her ability to convey Cersei’s vulnerability as well as her colder qualities.

  • Busy with a reread of aSoS and I just read the duel chapter last night. When I saw this pic, it immediately made me think of that moment, lol. I can’t wait anymore.

  • KG,

Oh yeah that one’s a classic without a doubt, what would have made it even better though is if they had Charles Dance in there in his famous stripper outfit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4qARHsCbIA

For anyone who hasnt seen it check it out, but beware once seen its hard to remove such images from ones mind.

  • Rygar:
    GG,

    Rhaegar was a rapist.

Actually Lianna Stark and Rhaegar were in love. She did not want to marry Robert and ran away with Rhaegar and bore his child, Jon Snow. She made Ned promise to take care of Jon on her deathbed.

  • That picture reminds me of the very first episode when Jon Arryn had those painted stones over his eyes. I don’t think that’s the funeral scene George had in mind. Obviously they didn’t have the budget to create Baelor’s Sept so the throne room had to make do, but incenses and organs in jars, really? I don’t think we’ll be getting any of that at Joffrey’s & Tywin’s funerals.

  • Wolfdog,

It’s a amazing how much James begins to look and act like Theon in that scene. And Lindsay, wow! I know I said Geraldine James for Barbrey Dustin but Lindsay is a close second favourite.

  • Valyrian Plastic,

I love this role of Charles Dance, it was the first movie I saw him in partly because of James McAvoy. It’s a sweet film with Benedict Cumberbach as an english version of Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.

Fun fact:Did you know that Charles and Lindsay were told that they didn’t have to strip off completely naked. Lindsay covered herself w/a small cloth but 60 year old Charles insisted that he parade around naked for the film, and when the cameras stopped rolling and the wardrobe assistant offered to cover him up he said No need darling, I’m fine.

  • Topdecker

I have always been convinced by this theory. When people assume Rhaegar was a rapist just because Robert Baratheon (who harboured a great deal of hate for the Targs for various reasons beyond the one that Rhaegar “stole” Lyanna) thought so, I immediately feel they don’t read the books with as much attention than they should.

Rhaegar is possibly one of the most mysterious characters in the entire saga and I think his motivations play an important role in the story. I am still intrigued by Ned’s very peculiar “neutral” stance toward Rhaegar in the first book. Plus, both book and tv Barristan thought very highly of Rhaegar and I am more prone to believe his judgement of character than Robert’s

  • That’s my stance on things also, in regards to Rhaegar, Morna. I never bought Robert’s view.

  • Wolfdog,

NEED TO KNOW NAME OF MOVIE.

Btw, Charles Dance was 60 years old when he filmed that?! O.o Dude is one sexy, sexy beast.

  • Oh are we on favorite theories now? :D

Here’s one of my very own.

Brienne is AA. Now that she and Jaime have met back up, the next book will feature some utterly unexpected sexytime (and it’s hard to say which one will be more bewildered by this staggering turn of events) then Brienne will somehow wind up being forced to use Oathkeeper (which is a RED sword, lest anyone forget) to kill off poor Jaime before he can become Goldenhand the Just. And before you say I’m goofy – in Jaime’s weirwood/bear dream, her sword flared up with magical light, too.

Ok personal crackpot theory posted for posterity. Place your bets on how close I am :D

  • Me neither. Robert’s view is one of those very nice ruses that GrrM purposefully gives to us. The same goes for Wylla. It is revealed to us through Ned that she is Jon’s mother, but then we later discover via an Arya chapter in aSoS she was actually Jon and Ned Dayne’s wet nurse (according to young Ned Dayne, and he is younger than Jon). Something just doesn’t add up… :) This is all just speculation so I won’t bother spoiler tagging.

  • ATG,

Yup! I’ll never ever doubt that guy when it comes to nudity, it was just a bit part for him one of his cameos because he was only doing DTV movies at that time. It’s called Starter for 10, great movie though predictable and everyone you know is in it!

  • OT: According to Digital Spy the Game of Thrones season 3 DVD set sold nearly 190,000 units in its first week, which is a box set record. I can’t find anything about the Blu-Ray sales or the sales in the USA. Does anybody have any info on this?

  • Topdecker: Actually Lianna Stark and Rhaegar were in love. She did not want to marry Robert and ran away with Rhaegar and bore his child, Jon Snow. She made Ned promise to take care of Jon on her deathbed.

I side by my boy Roberts POV.

  • “Fascinated by the Lannisters”! If I didn’t like his character already, that would have won me over. I’m that easy.

    Rygar,

Also, cannot wait for Robert’s POV to be blown to smithereens by Howland Reed’s! I.cannot.wait.

  • Hand of the Kingslayer,

Lol I’m still confused as to what exactly happened. They’ve used the internet before, right? They understand that “being called out” is fairly standard fare. Do they think comment sections have a hierarchy or something?

  • I’d like this post more if D&D hadn’t whitewashed the Red Viper.

Signed, generic Game of Thrones complainer.

    #sarcasm

  • Macharius:
It’s well known that Rorge and Biter are Azor Ahai and Nissa Nissa, respectively.

actually, I believe that’s the name of the lady who sang the song from Frozen last night on the Oscars. At least that’s what it sounded like John Travolta said.

  • Valyrian Plastic,

Yes I’ve been on the Gillian Anderson bandwagon for Lady Dustin, but Lindsay Duncan in the role would be awesome! Her Servilia Caepionis was fantastic. The more Rome veterans the better!

Agreed. Best acting on Rome. Tobias Menzies Brutus as well.

  • Psh. I trained in the blackest pits of internet hate.. This site is a Sunday afternoon baby shower even at its worst :)

So yeah … I’m more amused than aggrieved at your sudden and pointless hostility, but if it makes you feel like all manly, you just run along and get DOWN wit’ yo’ bad self. I’ll sit here and have some cake.

  • I’d love to have Gillian Anderson on the show, but there has to be a better role for her somewhere.

Lady Dustin is such a meh, re-heated character. How many “You love her she loves him, he loves somebody else, you just can’t win” broken people can GRRM throw into the story?

Close to my theory: Jaime is AA. He may be captured by the brotherhood and forced to fight Brienne. She may be forced to kill him. But the Brotherhood has a Red Priest among them. Jaime will be resurrected during his burial rites ala Beric . GRRM seems to be greatly influenced by the Ragnarok and Jaime’s story seems to be very close to that of Tyr.

  • Just a heads up, may want too put spoiler blocks on what has been said regarding R and L. I’m sure there are unsullied here.

  • Is that the whole interview?
Its weird, I already can’t imagine anyone other than Pedro playing Oberyn and I haven’t even seen him in action yet!

I wonder if she’d just get cut outright. Where is she necessary as of yet? Unless she *does* quote the J. Geils Band, in which case, all is forgiven.

  • KG,

Your skepticism is understandable. But I actually believe Lady Dustin is pro-Stark and is working with Manderly. I would love her to be the one to fuck Bolton over. They also have mentioned House Dustin and Barrowton several times in the series. Maybe D & D are laying the foundations because they know something we don’t. Also a female character working amongst the Boltons makes a interesting dynamic for the series. There’s definitely more than meets the eye with her character. I could be wrong though. Regardless Winds of Winter will settle how important she actually is to the narrative.

  • Al Swearengen,

Oded Fehr not playing the Red Viper don’t’ end the world. Nor pain and fuckin’ beatings. The world ends when your dead. So embrace Pedro Pascale like a man and open your mind!

  • You could well be right, But Mr. Martin seems to have lost his iron grip on the storyline and cast of thousands, so I reserve my right to raise an eyebrow and take the wait-and-see stance.

  • KG,

When did I question your right? I just offered my opinion, I even admitted that I could be wrong. I was just trying to demonstrate that there is a reason why some of us find her character a fascinating element in the Northern drama. Not all of us are the stupid idiots you seem to think we are. Sheesh.

  • KG,

Disregard my last comment if you could be so kind. I shouldn’t have to defend my position at all. That’s what the internet does. Makes one defensive.

  • Prior to the premiere of this season, the collective attitude of WicNet (and myself included) seems to be “fuck everyone else ’til the season starts. I want to hold on to my hype and prejudices dammit!”

  • ATG,

Careful though it’s set in the 80’s and the soundtrack could get you withdrawals. I went to youtube immediately to find the music in the movie. LMAO Like watching ‘All Is Lost’ and pissed myself silly in the bathroom afterwards.

  • Joshua Atreides,

Again, you’re looking for trouble where there’s none to be found.

It’s a fairly clever attempt at stealth trolling; accusing someone of trolling until they get angry and make you look like you were in the right all along. Sorry, I know that game all too well.

  • KG,

I wasn’t trolling or “stealth” trolling. I was defending my position when I thought it needed defending when it fact really didn’t. I was bullied constantly during my youth. I hate trolls and bullies alike. Hence my defensiveness. Maybe I’m just not cut out for the cutthroat world of the internet.

Please don’t think of me as a Troll :(

    LOL @ #sarcasm.

We cannot complain yet GreatJon! Season hasn’t started yet. Jeez, that’s preemptive strike if I ever saw one. Give us SOME credit.

Also, I understood they ran out of lime paint with Dany and Tyrion last season. Only thing left was the red for the Viper. Probably why they left the nick untouched. Otherwise it would be the White Viper for sure!

  • What’s with all this “getting along” bullshit? Where’s the hate? This isn’t the fandom I know and love.

  • I’m actually very nice. I am just not big on the herd instinct/say what everyone else says sort of thing.

    cosca:

  • KG,

I was with you until you put the smiley in.

    I know!
let’s get a healthy flame war going.

    Dany >>> Stannis

    Renly was the rightful king

    UnCat should be cut

    Walder Frey did nothing wrong

    Sansa is a terrible character

  • Cosca,

According to Walder Frey, Walder Frey didn’t do anything wrong. I have no idea what on earth you are talking about.

Sansa IS a terrible character, according to who you are talking to.

Renly WAS the rightful heir according to his loyal followers.

Dany has Dragons. Stannis has Mel. So, sure.. why not. (Don’t worry Mel, you are still my fave gal and dragons stand no chance!)

I draw the line at Cat.

I see no flame war reasons. You are such a tease!

  • Strider,
ok, better ramp it up a notch:

Tyrion should have died at Blackwater.

Cat deserved the RW for how she treated Jon Snow

AFFC/ADWD are travesties that should never have been written, ASOS should have served as an open ending to the series.

Renly would objectively have been a better King than Stannis

Sorry Neil, George RR Martin IS my bitch

  • Can’t wait for this coming Sunday!

Along the shore the cloud waves break,
The twin suns sink beneath the lake,
    The shadows lengthen
    In Carcosa.
Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies
    But stranger still is
    Lost Carcosa.
Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
    Must die unheard in
    Dim Carcosa.
    Song of my soul, my voice is dead;
Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
    Shall dry and die in
    Lost Carcosa.

  • cosca: Sorry Neil, George RR Martin IS my bitch

Well we totally agree on this one. So long as we are paying his bills, he’s our bitch.

  • cosca,

I was going to give you half of Tormund’s cookies for being nice yesterday! And then you write THAT?!
I wash my hands of you.

If you can tell at which one I started crying, I shall leave one for you for anyway.
