A new behind-the-scenes video was added to HBO On Demand today, entitled “Invitation to the Set.” Thanks to the magic of technology and the hard work of WiCnet reader darquemode, the full video has been uploaded to Youtube for your viewing pleasure.
UPDATE: The official HBO version is now embedded.
Winter Is Coming: Now that was awesome. Some great shots in there including new shots of Stannis, Melisandre, Brienne, and Margaery. And look at that, wildfire! Hearing the cast talk about everyone being a family was great as well. Keep an eye on our Tumblr as we screencap the best bits of this vid.

-Melisandre the Red priestess as if taken from the pages of Deviant Art itself: words fail me. I have gooseflesh right now. With post-production techniques that shot will create even more goosebumps. Can’t wait to see Carice in action.
-The zoom in of Stannis at the map table was fantastic. Dillane may not look like the Stannis in my head, but his gravitas will seal the deal.
-Margaery! Hello Natalie! You fit right in here!
-Cersei in Lannister red robes = perfection. It seems Littlefinger is going to get a few more scenes this season, which is fine by me. Can’t wait for some Aidan/Lena interaction.

And Phil, re Arstan and Belwas? I wouldn’t count on that aspect of the story remaining as it did in the books. If D&D are to be believed (and I think they should be) Dany’s tale this year is going to hold some real surprises for everybody, including those who are intimately familiar with the books.

Just watched this on On Demand. A great little peak behind the scenes. My favorite parts were the shots of new characters, namely Brienne, Margaery, Jeyne, Melisandre and Stannis. That shot of Mel on the beach was so perfect, and Stannis at the map table was great too. Arya in Harrenhal, Tyrion holding wildfire, and the NW camp outside of Crasters (at least that’s what I think it was) also got me excited.
Dinklage said he thinks S2 will top S1, and I think that will definitely be true. We don’t have to get through all that exposition, so we can get right into things, and there is so much to get to in ACOK! I’m so excited for the new characters, for Tyrion’s reign as Hand, and for the adventures/trials that await Jon/Arya/Dany.
We’re almost there guys!

Don’t have the ability to slow it down, trying to see if I can see Arstan amongst the crowd.

Hollyoak,
I think the highlights will be (Huge Spoilerwarning for Book 2 content)
The battle of the Blackwater with the Lannister – Tyrell alliance and Tyrion nearly getting killed, Danys House of the Undying (if not cut), Jons fight with the Halfhand and him joining the wildlings, Arya escaping Harrenhall, Jaime setting off with Brienne, and probably a lot of other suprises I forgot. Sure, some of them weigh more than others, but for me those were the highlights of the book and i am really excited to see them on screen.
Maybe all this crazy stuff at winterfell with Theon, but i suppose they will a)change it or b) put it back for the third season.

Hollyoak,
The “big ending” of the second book is A. Bran and Rickon are still alive… this is a minor reveal because most readers (myself included) didn’t think they were dead to begin with. B. The second part of the reveal is that they never left Winterfell, but instead were hiding under Theon’s nose the whole time.
It would/could make a fine ending for season 2… but many (again, including me) think it would be smart to end the second season with the attack of undead on the Fist, which begins the Third Book.
The Argument for moving it up to season 2: A. The Fist was filmed in Iceland… better to go ahead and film it now, while the team was there. B. It’s active and TV friendly… more of a TV finale than the book’s Rickon is alive ending. C. Gets the White Walkers back out front after a non-appearance in the 2nd book.
The Reasons not to move the Fist attack to season 2: A. Great way to kick season 3 off with a bang. B. It sets up Sam’s solo adventure which would play out in season 3… better to keep them together. C. Storm of Swords is rather action light in the front half; i.e. all the action/fighting resolves around the Night’s Watch until the RW… so you need some action pieces for Season 3 which looks to end right after the RW.

Actually she’s only been in Meereen for one book (less if you consider her taking off with Drogon to be “leaving Meereen”), of course it seems longer since in real life its been 12 years! And obviously most people want to see her get her ass to Westeros. On the other hand, since returning from Winterfell early in the first book, Cersei hasn’t ever left King’s Landing.

I think that House on Undying are not in 10. episode, but some 8 or 9. Don’t put too much cliffhanger in end, and Dany have her “epic end” in 1. season, now ending is leaving Qarth to west, like Tyrions ending in 1. season, nothing dramatical.

As a bit of trivia; radioactive material are generally not at all like what movies and TV shows tend to show them as. Plutonium is just a chunk of grey metal and radioactive material rarely glows. When they do glow it’s usually not green. It’s like that computers in movies often make all sorts of odd sounds when they are processing things on their own, which would just be annoying.
So while I understand why you draw that connection it doesn’t actually look radioactive. :)

littlejanet,
I agree that it looks like Roxanne McKee as Doreah at 1:13 which would be a departure for her character. I think my hopes of another “It is known” chorus steadily diminished throughout season 1; after Episode 2 “The Kingsroad” we never see Sarita Piotrowski as Jhiqui again although Doreah and Irri (played by Amrita Acharia) are in the majority of Dany’s episodes. Perhaps Jhiqui is going to succumb to the red waste instead.

Phil Norris,
re: Belwas. I don’t think it was him. It looked consistent with what we have seen of the Qartheen meeting Dany. I think the rotund man may be Nicholas Blane as the Spice King. There is a link to a screen cap from the Shadow tease below. Interestingly in the 1:54 shot we can see a tall thin bald man in blue who is not visible in the shots from the earlier trailer. I think this is Ian Hanmore as Pyat Pree.

I can’t wait to see Iceland contrasted with the warm richness of Qarth. Its going to give audiences a visual feast.
Also, anyone want to speculate about the new material added to Dany’s storyline? It looks like they’re trying to create some kind of confrontation outside the gates of Qarth. I can’t remember how it happened in the book, but is it possible that the writers have decided to make Quarth Dany’s first city that she conquers? Its odd that she says “I am DS and I will take what is mine!” to a city that welcomed her (albeit coldly) in the book.

I agree about Stannis’ sigil on his costume. I also noticed that antlers on the breastplate of Renly’s armour for the first time in this one and loved that too.
Winter Is Coming,
Given that she is running to Lannister men and there are Lannister banners in the castle at this time I tend to agree that this is Harrenhal under Clegane rather than later. There is another shot of Arya approaching what looks to be the same huddle of Lannister men at 2:08

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s character does not have alot going on in the second book at all, so expect to see a good slice of book 3 tacked onto this series to show some more Jamie Lannister.
If you’ve read the books, you’ll know there’s actually quite a convenient place for the director to yell ‘cut’ for Jamie’s story and leave the rest for the next season. No more than a handful of his book 3 scenes will added in I reckon…

Anyone care to guess what scene she was filming that day? It looks like she’s on an indoor set, there’s some foliage in the background, and behind that a dark blue/purple colour (blue screen? matte painting?)
Already been commented that Doreah is alive and well in Qarth.
Could I possibly put out a call for wildfiregate? The jar of wildfire is a long way from what is described in the book, as well as what would be practical and safe.
I’m pretty sure (though someone could check) that the jars of wildfire are described as earthenware jars. The jar Tyrion is holding is clearly glass – If wildfire is corrosive, then a glass container is certainly necessary, but in any other situation, glass is probably too expensive in the world of westeros, as well as likely to not be of a sufficiently high enough quality to be able to ensure against random breakage due to imperfections.
Secondly, the shape of the jar is all wrong – a narrow neck, above a body which is very wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. This shape a) is prone to toppling over easily, b) is highly space inefficient – if the pyromancers have stockpiled tens of thousands of jars, they would be made into a shape which is more practical to store, and c) causes the wildfire to have a greater surface area of substance to air interface – leading to increased vaporisation and an increased risk of catastrophe.
The jars would incidentally also be very difficult to pour (if that was a concern).
A jar with a wide flat bottom leading to a long narrow neck (to minimise surface area) would probably be the best compromise in terms of something that could be practically mass produced in westeros. Such a jar would need reinforcing around the neck to prevent accidental breakage whilst being carried. Alternative shapes would be narrow rectangular prisms (space efficient, but difficult to make with structural integrity), or simple cylinders (less space efficient than rectangular, would lead to a greater material-to-volume ratio, and having narrow necks would necessitate small volume jars).
Other alternative would be if wildfire is more dense than oil and also not oil-soluble, allowing for a protective layer of oil over the top.
Wildfiregate!

For the love of the Seven, I was almost in tears! How moving! Peter is so awesome and I want Robb’s voice to record to fall asleep with, yum!

agor,
Try this fro chrome:
Copy: chrome://cache/ and past it in your chrome address bar.
There should be a long list.
Control + F and search for the name of the picture. (Like I suggest before ‘1600’ or a GoT keyword)
If you have trouble with finding the pictures clear your cache (you must visit hbo.com after again).

Re: end of season 2 and events in book 3
It will be interesting to see if they even film the events of the fist. Remember they don’t happen in real time even in the book, they are told thru Sam’s memories as he is fleeing on foot after the battle. Hopefully they do show it, but considering every other battle has been cut so far, and how much of the budget presumably is going into Blackwater, it seems unlikely they could do it justice this season.

Hubby and I started the re-watch of S. 1 this week, and it’s interesting – I find that with a year under its belt, I can enjoy the show much more. I’ve calmed down about everything I spazzed about at first, and I can enjoy it for what it is, not a literal translation of the books, but a fun, interesting, enjoyable TV show ‘based’ on the books. It’s given me hope for S. 2, which looks awesome. I think I’ll be able to watch and not spazz as much as I did last year. Come on April 1st!

What made me squeal:
1:14 Doreah in Quarth
1:18 Arya running over to Weeze
1:19 Crasters home ( can’t be the Fist, because there are a lot of trees in the background
1:53 Stannis Flaming Heart and the Map table
1:55 as others have mentioned this will be the Spice King instead of Belwas
2:05 Ms. Westerling
2:10 are those Sparrows in Harrenhall
2:16 the Pyromancers Piss

I got it! THANK YOU.
With people like you in it the world grows a little brighter every day.

TC,
I could see the season ending with the night’s watchmen hearing the dreaded third blast of the horn, and a shot of a few White Walkers and/or wights emerging from the trees or charging up the hill…then credits. This would leave a very strong cliffhanger, and forgo the need to film the complete battle until next season. As others have mentioned, it would also serve to reintroduce the threat of the White Walkers, which will be absent for much of the season.

I loved the video but I have one problem. Maybe others have voice this as well but I really wish we could see more Sam. Had a brief glimpse of him in this video but hardly see him featured in anything.
MOAR SAM!

Agreed – that would be awesome.

Potential Season 2 Cliffhangers:
I think they will move up Jaime losing his hand to the end of this season in Robb’s Camp. He will then begin his travels with Brienne one handed.
Bran and Rickon will be found alive, and Osha will take Rickon away and Bran will head off north with just Hodor and Summer
Tyrion will get his face hacked
Davos on the Blackwater
Arya killing a dude
I also think that Maergery will be played as a lesbian or bisexual to further add drama to her and Renly’s arc
Attack on the Fist will be final shot of season…
TenesmusQuote Reply
Tenesmus,
That could be the case, although I would hope it’s not. If Jaime loses his hand in Robb’s camp there’s not as much hope to use him as a way to get the Stark girls released unharmed. Sure, Catelyn is pretty out of it when she releases him but it should be clear that if Jaime comes home mutilated the Lannisters would do the same to Sansa or Arya.

Holy shit Brienne could mess up anyone – look at her she’s a BAMF, no joke.
I think I’m getting to the point where I don’t really want to see any more new content before the actual series airs (!??!?!). Blasphemy, I know…

It’s great to see Peter talking more candidly about the show because all the other interviews we’ve seen seem to be kinda uncomfortable for him. And it’s nice to finally see Richard Madden in an interview, because I haven’t really seen anything from him (though I’ve only been following this site for about a month now.)

Somewhat OT;
Is Brienne supposed to be much (if at all) taller than Jaime in the books? I’m asking since I looked up the actors’ heights and Christie is actually less than an inch taller than Coster-Waldau.
Reverse NielsenQuote Reply
Reverse Nielsen,
I always thought she was at most an inch or two taller than him? If they are of a height that’s good enough I think. They are closely matched as fighters, physically (Jaime has more skill and experience obviously, being ~10 years her senior).

I’ve seen the wildfire in slow speed and there is some silver thing in the glass, what cloud this being?
No-OneQuote Reply
userj,
Yeah, I guess it will work just fine. They can also up her height a bit if they want to emphasise the difference, but then it will be clear enough from her interaction with the rest of the cast, most of whom, excepting Greatjon, are a fair bit shorter than her or Coster-Waldau.
(The actor playing the Greatjon is actually just as tall.)

to repeat what many others have commented before me… this looks freakin’ awesome!!!!!! 40 more days!!!!!! it’s like lent!

Tywin’s Bastard,
I think they may have Jaime try to escape, kill a couple guards, and get recaptured, then beaten and almost killed while Cat is away. She comes back after witnessing Renly’s death to find Jaime handless and then decides to sneak him out because he is about to be executed, as a last resort to get her daughters back. I don’t know how else they give him an arc is season two
TenesmusQuote Reply
Agreed. I think Brienne is the one I’m looking forward to most. I also think that, like Harry Lloyd and Iain Glenn, she’ll make me like the character even more than when I read the books.

You know that feeling you get when a new ASOIAF book comes out? This video just gave me that feeling.
Simply amazing. The greatest show in TV history, as far as I’m concerned. At least, no other show, and very few movies, have ever taken me to “that place”. The most sublime form of escapism I know of. It’s like heroin, without the heroin.

Wildfiregate?
Nah.
It sure looks a lot greener and more glowy than I imagined in the books and, yes, it was very specifically described as being in earthenware jars in the books. But this is television! Adding a little menace to the stuff is fine, especially since we didn’t get to see Thoros waving the green flames around in Season 1. I suppose maybe Tyrion could merely be holding a SAMPLE in that pretty glass flask. It could get pretty expensive to reproduce that kind of thing a hundred times over so perhaps we’ll see less pretty but much bigger quantities in some other kind of containers.
I’m hoping we’ll actually SEE some novice pyromancer have an accident with the stuff and then get buried under tons and tons of sand. That was mentioned as a possible scenario in ACOK although it never actually happened on Tyrion’s watch.
ChrisQuote Reply
This show makes me so jealous of their production value. Reading the books, my imagination takes the places and armor/clothing to as awesome as I can think and then the show turns around and takes it to another level.
The green wildfyre looked great in Tyrion’s hand, I can only imagine the pure devastation and beauty of it when used by the folks at HBO.
Also @ above, Jamie and Brienne. Jamie is much stronger and a better warrior. Think about some of the hindrances both characters have during their conflicts, and which are more hampering.

And still no Asha/Yara…which makes me worry that they will be decreasing the importance of her character. Then again, I suppose her involvement is limited in Book 2. But considering how important she is later on, I would think they might at least drop a brief glimpse. I’m VERY intrigued by how the actress they have cast will pull her character off – guess I’ll just have to wait another 5 weeks. or 6…or 7…or however long until her episode rolls around…grrr…
Mike JohnsonQuote Reply
Mike Johnson,
The thing is if you make it obvious in a trailer/behind the scenes video who Asha/Yara is then the surprise of finding out her identity in her first scene will be lost.
But yeah a glimps of her without giving her name would be nice for the book fans.
