Kraznys and Prendahl cast

There’s more fresh casting news today! Two more roles have been confirmed by Westeros.org.

Dan Hildebrand will be playing the role of Kraznys, a slaver who sells the famous “Unsullied” warriors. The actor was seen most recently on Sons of Anarchy, playing Sean Casey. Hildebrand has worked with HBO before, playing both Shaughnessy and Tim Driscoll on the series Deadwood.

Ramon Tikaram will be playing Prendahl, captain of the mercenary company called the Stormcrows. Tikaram is a regular on British television, appearing in series such as Eastenders, Primeval, White Heat, and Casualty.

Ours is the Fury:  The cast is filling out nicely! Hildebrand looks different from the book’s description of Kraznys, who was quite fat and darker-skinned. I’m not familiar with Tikaram’s work, but his lengthy resume is certainly impressive. What do you think of the new additions?

Nice..so if we are for sure getting Daario, Prendahl and Mero (a month ago was leaked an audition for him), that means that in Season 3 we will see the rode to Meeren/Yunkai, and not only until the sack of Astapor

    Please, please..sent me Belwas..

Assuming HBO contacted Westeros and asked them to announce this, does WiC also have some exclusive casting news coming up?

Maybe Belwas and Mero, then EW finishes it all off with Daario ;) ?

    Michel,

I have thought from the beginning we will get to Yunkai and the freed slaves cheering “Mother! Mother!”, but it’s nice to get some confirmation in the roles cast!

    Bring on Daario!
    Bring on Mero!
Bring on the liver and onions!
Bring on the mighty Strong Belwas!

Dan Hildebrand has an awesome voice. Speaking of which…Master Ignacio, get back to Denerim, I’ve heard something bad, ahem, happened to a man. *wink*

Mental note: a Deadwood re-watch is long overdue.

I think both actors will be great, but they are not what I pictured in my mind. Personally I don’t think either role’s physical appearance is too important so I’m not worried whatsoever!

I dont care much about the actor not being fat, the show isn’t 10% as graphical as the novels anyway…

If HBO is going to be totally loyal to the books, these characters are missing from Dany POVs until we go to Meeren:

Daario, Grey Worm, Mero, Belwas, Grazdan mo Ullhor, Cleon, Ben Plumm, Grazdan mo Eraz and Oznak zo Pahl (the guy who Belwas defeated)..

I don’t really care who they cast as these characters, as whenever I started a Dany chapter it was always “Wait, so who is Kreznak Mo Hrizarhsqh again?”. All faceless to me as well. Don’t really care about Darrio either.

    Carne,

I agree, I will not be disappointed if certain actors are not cast in most of the Dany supporting roles. None of the roles mean enough to me to care I guess. I will admit certain actors could get me excited. Say Amr Waked as Daario for instance. The role does not move me, but he actor does…. he’s just so good.

Although, last night while watching Strike Back’s season 3 premiere I saw Hakeem Kae-Kazim and thought he would be perfect as Brown Ben Plumm! He looks so much younger than his 50 years in most of his roles, but with the white beard I instantly thought of Ben Plumm! Here’s a screencap from last night’s episode.

Guilty as charged… The obsessed part not the good part seeing as I only got 1 of the cast roles correct, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Jojen Reed. Although I did have a few of the right actors in the wrong roles, and a few actors looked exactly like I thought they would cast the role, but I managed to miss the actor that was cast.
    *Shrug*

I think I spent 20 or 30 hours on my speculation casting list for Season 3 and then I said I would not spend so much on Season 4′s casting list. Which of course means I have already spent maybe 5 to 10 hours on it before Season 3 even airs! XD

I have 20 or so roles (MArtells, Sands and Greyjoys etc) and actors with photos sorted already, but it’s just the precursor to the real list. I’m still collecting fan suggestions from sites like this or friends as I add my own. I have very few narrowed down to my personal favorite/s right now… Just 5 or 6 possibilities for each role. I won’t have the final draft done until closer to Season 4 when I know which roles were left out or included in Season 3 and what actors have roles in upcoming series or films etc..

I could e-mail you the current list (with or without photos) in a rar or zip file if you really want. XD

I think there are like 5 roles left on my list right now, but original there were maybe 20 or 25… I forget. You can get an idea how it was though if you look at the roles yet uncast at the bottom of the page… Daario is the first role yet uncast I think.

Ya see, apart from the poisonedones… I think I’d really like to try them!

You want to try locusts, go to Thailand. You can get all manner of bugs as street food there. Also Cambodia, where they do fried spiders with sugar and chili. The guy who was showing us around Cambodia told me that they started eating spiders during the Khmer Rouge era of mass starvation, but many developed a liking for them.

Similar things can also be found as food in Vietnam and China.

Actually, come to think of it, I can remember seeing someone here in Australia trying to market candied locusts… We have occasional locust plague problems in the crop growing areas here.

I’ve eaten my share of buttery beetles and bugs as a child and teen. I never liked the
fibrous portion that would not dissolve like the middle. I guess it depends too how
they were prepared. I do miss eating conch and salted dried fish which is excellent
when soaked and steamed but I enjoy now the modern conveinces from living in the
States. GoT character Illyrio feasted on quite an assortment of foodstuffs while
entertaining Tyrion, the entire section made my mouth water.

I think they’re going to save the Dornish until Season 4 – they already have a whole slew on new characters to introduce over 10 hours… to add in The Red Viper & his paramour would probably be a lot to absorb in one season.

My guess is that the Purple Wedding will be early in Season 4, so the Dornish won’t be needed until around that time.

Always knew Mark Addy could pull off a kingly role, he was only a drunken
monk in Robin Hood ( with Russell Crowe ) but I saw more potential there.
Also his other roles like being a detective , there was just the attitude of a
potential leader. Lena Headley is has been okay but her challenging moments
are coming in future episodes. On the other hand, Jack Gleeson and Emilia
Clark really commanded from the start.

I know and that’s the way I reckoned from the beginning. Yet I keep seeing the Direwolf

To conclude; I’m not utilising GoT as as guide for accents because that is not my
reference for ASOIAF. The far North as Sweden or Finland ( not Russia ) still
makes sense if Scotland and the North Sea was a bit closer in those days. The UK,
Wales and Ireland fits too.The South of France and Spain is nearer to North
Africa and fits also. Where would the Eyrie be then, Northern Germany, N France

Just an FYI, Direwolves (as a name) aren’t fiction. They are an extinct animal that roamed the earth the same times as Saber-Toothed Tigers and Mammoths, etc. Not quite before man, but pre-historic.

GRRM responded to an interviewer with a question of countries and culture of ASOIAF
that he merged similarities of a few to come up with a composite sample. The same
reasoning for the animals of ASOIAF. I gave up on obvious signs or 21st century facts
did not apply per se. I love cartography and maps as this helped me envision the world
existed beyond the desolate country I grew up in. I do not have a photographic memory
however. When I sought out maps for each region of the 7 kingdoms and beyond I had
to give up and concentrate on neighbouring important towns of historical importance.
When GRRM gave that answer I focused more ( well I sort of read very fast ) on the story
also eliminating the concept of good vs bad. When my neighbour brought up the subject
of regions, I thought I knew but ended up babbling nonsense a I did with YvYB. What’s
your perspective on this ? Are the maps in ASOIAF books sufficient in mapping out
the 7 kingdoms and the world beyond ?

Lena Headley did handle herself well with Cersei’s character. I was however, annoyed
with the writers for giving her pity me moments with actual tears although those
moments do not overshadow the very good portrayal of the queen regent. I am
most interested in the demanding roles she’d play in the future. There will be
fewer people for distraction ( no Tyrion or minions ) with focus on her delivery. The

    Riverlands France
    Eyrie Hungary
    High Garden Italy
    Stormlands Holy Roman Empire

Well these are all really surprising to me. How is the Eyrie anything like Hungary? :) Not mocking, I’m just really curious.
And why the 2 centuries gap between the North and the Crownlands&Westerlands?

I agree with the Viking influences… long boats, smash and grab…. I think I just said Ireland to simplify. Also I’m hedging my bets with Dorne I’m eagerly awaiting the castings to see what they come up with ;p Bravos was in mind Spanish. Hence Syrio, and the fighting styles and swords. When I read of Dorne I get the feelings of Italian influences. The” Hot blooded ” nature, the wines etc. As for the Eyrie and Riverlands … that to me is The Lake District :)

I was unsure about Braavos at first, but when I re-read Arya’s chapters I found it has a stricking resemblance to Venice (the canals, the serpent boats).

Tom Sevinstrings: Really? I must have misread. I got the feeling the Dany thought Jorah was being really creepy

Really? I got the feeling it was something that could have easily belonged in The Fountainhead. :) And while book-Jorah is no Gary Cooper, there are some that could argue with that when it comes to Iain Glen, heh.

I don’t really care who they cast as these characters, as whenever I started a Dany chapter it was always “Wait, so who is Kreznak Mo Hrizarhsqh again?”. All faceless to me as well. Don’t really care about Darrio either.

I have to agree. My mind wanders during most of her POVs because I just don’t care about her anymore. I’ve pretty much lost all track of who’s who, so casting doesn’t matter to me.

    WildSeed,

In my opinion those pity moments were perfect. Martin’s Cersei at times comes very close to becoming a cartoon character, especially with her POVs in Feast. Martin redeemed her character in ADWD though. I dunno, I think D & D decided to make Cersei waaay more complex than Martin did. They are setting up her downward spiral perfectly. I can’t count how many times I have read reviews from critics and non-reader fans on how complex and facinating Cersei is. The same with Tywin who many reader fans say is a different character than that in the books. Why? Because he is “nice” to Arya? He still had Elia and her children killed, he still sacked Kings Landing. He is still a hateful person when it comes to Tyrion. He is a cold hearted pragmatist that values intelligence, Arya amused him. Yet book fans say his character is destroyed yet they also say Jaime is ruined because he killed his cousin. No their ideal of him is destroyed that’s all. And some people can’t get past that. As a reader fan GoT is set to dissapoint you from the get go, once you get past that eventual disappointment and appreciate the show on its own merits than you begin to see the interpretation that is being made. I see GoT as a dramatization of a complex ‘historical’ subject.
Not that D & D haven’t made some misteps: exhibit A Catelyn while played excellently by Fairley has been trimmed down to a mother figure in the series and there are many other narrative problems that they’ve run into do to budget limitations and artistic license. I just don’t feel that the examples I made are among them.

I’m sorry late night early morning. Dunno how I made that mistake but meant Denmark with the lingering Viking influence (mountain clans)in latter middle ages.
As for the other query. Scotland post William Wallace with a king instead of the quarreling clans and overall weakling anarchy.
England 12th century because I see the Wester and Crownlands more as pre-hundred years war era with the longstanding professional armies. If this was the case Stafford Lannister would have been able to deploy his force immediately instead of having to raise and train them first…

Oh these things we could, and do, say.

    Kraznys first, of course:

“He will not come,” Kraznys said.

“There is a reason. A dragon is no slave.” And Dany swept the lash down as hard as she could across the slaver’s face. Kraznys screamed and staggered back, the blood running red down his cheeks into his perfumed beard. The harpy’s fingers had torn his features half to pieces with one slash, but she did not pause to contemplate the ruin. “Drogon,” she sang out loudly, sweetly, all her fear forgotten. “Dracarys.”

The black dragon spread his wings and roared.

A lance of swirling dark flame took Kraznys full in the face. His eyes melted and ran down his cheeks, and the oil in his hair and beard burst so fiercely into fire that for an instant the slaver wore a burning crown twice as tall as his head. The sudden stench of charred meat overwhelmed even his perfume, and his wail seemed to drown all other sound.”

“Woman, you bray like an ass, and make no more sense.”

“Woman? She chuckled. “Is that meant to insult me? I would return the slap, if I took you for man.” Dany met his stare. “I am Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, the Unburnt, Mother of Dragons, khaleesi to Drogo’s riders, and Queen of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.”

“What you are,” said Prendahl na Ghezn, “is a horeslord’s whore. When we break you, I will breed you to my stallion.”

Strong Belwas drew his arakh. “Strong Belwas will give his ugly tongue to the little queen, if she likes.”

“No, Belwas. I have given these men safe conduct.” She smiled. “Tell me this ~ are Stormcrows slave or free?”

“We are a brotherhood of free men,” Sallor declared.

“Good.” Dany stood. “Go back and tell your brothers what I said, then. It may be that some of them would sooner sup on gold and glory than on death. I shall want your answer on the morrow.”

And yeah he’s a lot whiter than I would have cast. I don’t recall them describing Kraznys’s skin color but he’s Ghiscari, and they usually have “amber” colored skin, which suggests golden/reddish brown, depending on the shade.

eta: I looked it up- yeah, Kraznys is described himself as “amber.” I think they might have botched the race on this role. :

Thank you for suggesting Amr Waked for the role of Daario! He played the terrorist known as “the blue-eyed Egyptian”, in “Syriana” – right? Beautiful eyes, beautiful voice, and very deadly intentions – the Egyptian version of Jaqen H’ghar. Just saw him in “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”. Almost missed this incredible movie with such a great cast – along with Amr, there is Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Kristen Scott Thomas, Tom Mison and ……. I knew the voice, I knew the face – but I couldn’t figure out who the actor was – and then it hit me – Varys (Conleth Hill) with hair! As usual, he steals every scene he is in.
So – the exotic and handsome Amr Waked for Daario and, of course, Alexander Siddig, another “Syriana” star, for the Red Viper.

If any of the Slaver cities is left out, I’ll bet you it’s Yunkai. I remember Jorah saying something about a boat to Astapor and there was mention of Mereen at the party scene, but no talk regarding Yunkai as of yet. Not that these mentions guarantee an appearance of the location, but a lack of mention of a place from the books makes it easier to leave it out on the show without having to worry about canon.

If Dany has left Qarth already by the start of Season 3, maybe a certain assassination attempt could go down in Astapor instead?

Skin tone is such a picayune thing to worry about, as so much can be done with lighting, makeup, clothing tone. The 2 characters above will probably not last long in S3 if the books are followed, so these actors must do much with little in order to make their mark. Their skin tones will matter very little to their characters’ motives, their manner and vocal delivery will be key. Minor characters often leave large impacts though as we have seen, and so it will be fascinating to see how these characters are handled. As we all know, some survive in the books and not in the show, and vice versa. The adaptation has its own method that we do not understand fully, but looking back it appears that most changes made to more minor characters have been for the purpose of leaving more room for a more major character to develop or to deepen our understanding of the major characters’ motivations or intentions. A woman thinks that skin tone is really only pertinent when trying to establish a character’s origins and manners, and this is most pertinent with the major characters who need to show a culture of their own in order to establish traditions, etc. (such as the Dornish, who honor the inheritance of female children as well as male children in order of birth, amongst other differences of tradition and culture that derive from their distant history). When a commenter quibbles about skin tone, a woman always wonders why this is so important if the character is a minor one? D&D have already shown that there is a diversity of skin tones in the world of Westeros/Essos, and they have provided a rich tapestry of characters so far. Have faith that they will continue this trend.

Amr Waked, while attractive and reportedly well-talented as an actor, does not make a woman’s loins awaken as Jaqen does, so the comparison made by a few above is a stretch. Daario should be a man ANY woman who loves men would feel lust for (or would at least say…”OH HE’s GORGEOUS”), and one that even men who love women would agree has attractiveness beyond the norm. Amr Waked looks more average in attractiveness to this woman. YMMV, attractiveness is a subjective measure, it is known.

Fascinating isn’t it. The point also illustrates that for whatever claim we have of
our differences we also share the same influences of language, culture and life.
In India, a land of many languages and dialect, share common words originating
from Eastern Europe. As a person growing up in a country with a derivative
language, native Indian with African and European influences are so mingled
that it’s impossible at times to differentiate. When I came abroad to study my
room mate who grew up in Punjabi India, and I used to have fake debates about
who invented ” chutney “. In the Caribbean where fresh and preserved fruit is
served with every meal, consider it ludicrous to consider the origin of this.
Honestly it’s a simple answer of a populace making the most of their environment
to nourish and aid their own, sometimes it’s just duplicated or improved upon.
Don’t let me get started on the origin of noodles :D :D :D Now I’m hungry.

    WildSeed,

I might have, though this past weekend all news and comments were read from the small screen of my blackberry so it would have been easy to skipped it by accident. Driving and reading WIC.net is perhaps not such a good idea.
From what I’ve seen so far WIC.net is probably the internet domain with the nicest posters, yes there are one or two mean ones (looking at you CLaudia) but overall it’s a tight knit community. Most other domains seem to be mudslinging contests and other deragotory discussions. So with the WIC.net guys transferring there the discussions remain civil, friendly and interesting
Oh and the best part in select discussions you can spoil all you want without adding the spoiler text, *sigh* so freeing.

    Mrs. H’ghar,

Whitewashing isn’t a “quibble”- it’s a real problem, with non-white performers being marginalized and non-white characters ignored. Kraznys is a minor role, but the size of the part doesn’t matter. There are some great essays on the subject out there, so I’d recommend googling whitewashing and reading up on the subject. Basically, they can’t just paint brown makeup (or whatever appropriate skin shade) on a white person. It’s not okay. When the character was written as a Person of Color, then they should be cast that way.
I don’t think they’ll paint up Hildebrand, btw- he’ll just be white. As for the rest of the Ghiscari/Astapor citizens, I don’t know.

Oh I’m a sucker for any debate on cultural references. :) We’re of the same opinion, with only a few small differences in regards to the Iron Islands, which – despite their insularity – I’ve always felt that were based on more of a viking culture, and Dorne – which I strongly associate with Moorish Spain.

Viking or Celt ? Moorish Spain implies African influence.

I’m not too familiar with his work, but I really like his look for either…

I’m not sure he will be available.
He says on his Twitter July 23 that he “Just tried on a wig for a period movie… 1700 in France

He could be available though if that period movie role is not too large a role……
After reading about him he sounds perfect for Daario. He has martial arts training and horse riding experience… and wants a good script.

The viking influence is why I said Iron Islands Sicily, only difference being that Sicily is an extrememly fertile and wealthy country in Medieval Times. The kingdom of Sicily was established after the Normans who originally are Vikings conquered it.

I didn’t know that and it’s very interesting! I will most certainly be on the look for books where I can read more on the subject. Thanks for the info!

Tír Airgid: Thanks for your kind if not understanding words. I thought I was undergoing symptoms of a brain aneurysm.

? I’m quite puzzled by your words. Don’t see how my comment could be ununderstanding towards you or other posters. If it was, I apologize.

I am aware Martin combined and melted influences in the pot of his own imagination to give us all this unique, interesting places.

I believe a work of art is not only affected by the creator’s intentions but also by each “receiver”‘s perceptions, and so from one book a million are born, in the mind of each and every one of the readers.

So even though I am interested in which places in particular he drew inspiration from, I’m even more interested in what kind of associations they stirred on readers minds. You never know what delicious snippet from information you’re going to stumble upon.

For example, hadn’t been for what you guys said, I would have probably never pondered upon the simmilarities between Winterfell and Russia, or never suspected there could have been any sort of Viking connection to Sicily (and I am looking forward to investigate more into that matter), etc. I thought it would be interesting to get more opinions, and anyone who finds it boring could simply skip those posts.

I am really excited to see the great “Lost in Translation” scene with Dany + Missandei + Kraznys + Whitebeard on screen. Love how Dany outsmarts them all… I wonder if we get to hear the details about their “training” :p

Great News that Dan Hildebrand is cast in Game Of Thrones. He was awesome in Deadwood.

I found out some awesome gossip about Dan !!! Dan Hildebrand doesn’t only play tough guy on screen – he has another role that’s even harder – he has just come back from building an orphanage in Haiti for a children’s charity called “haiti hero”. He raised the funds himself, laid the foundations, put up re-bar, sprayed concrete and battled with tarantulas, torrential rain and searing heat. Check out the charity and the blog photos on http://haitihero.blogspot.co.uk/ especially the bit about his battle with a giant tarantula. EEeeeeeK!!!

    Nice one Dan!
