The creation of an Ice henge for Game of Thrones
By Ours is the Fury on in Production.

The conclusion of this week’s episode of Game of Thrones has everyone talking about the reappearance of the White Walkers, the identity of their leader (played by British-American actor Richard Brake), and the child’s shocking transformation. The finale of “Oathkeeper” occurred within a ring of frozen pillars, and thanks to an in-depth blog from Glacial Art Ice Sculptors published last Friday, we now have a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the site.

According to Glacial Art:
“The ice henge would consist of ten spikes of ice, three of which had to be replicated exactly, and a central ice altar; each spike was made from three separate pieces of ice which had been fused together and weighed around 300 kilos. In the end the collected weight of their ice henge – plus spares – was around six tonnes.”

They go on to say:
“There were two cranes overhead holding lighting and sun shaders; there must have been about thirty trucks and lorries, about a hundred people running around doing their various tasks. Not to mention the white walkers in full make up and armour.”

“We spent a lot of time creating a natural jaggedy texture to the ice,” Mat of Glacial Art says, in the blog. “This starts to melt away quickly as the ice warms up.” The sculpting artists used tools such as CO2 fire extinguishers, blow torches and chainsaws to maintain the ice sculptures throughout two days of filming.

For more details on the process, read the full blog post on at Glacial Art’s website.

    Jeff O’Connor,

I take that back the guy in the picture has some sort of highborn white walker outfit on and his skin is definitely not made of ice. I got a feeling the babies turn into the Ice monsters who do the grunt work.

Anyways, based on what he said about Jojen’s deteriorating health and being remembered by history as more of an accessory to greatness than a great person himself….I’m kind of getting the feeling that Jojen won’t be with us for much longer. Given how close we are to catching up to Bran’s point in the books, plus a distinct lack of agency for the Reeds once they reach the cave, I would not be at all surprised to see Jojen become the first major character to be killed off on the show before they are in the books.

Finally more from the White Walkers and direwolves in the last episode. Would love to see more from the creation of the direwolves too.

But there are 12 Persons/things already introduced in the show which I personally wish to see more (in order of my personal interest):

    - Nymeria <- who in the books leads a pack of wolves that raid the riverlands)
    - Brotherhood without Banners (Beric, Thoros…)
    - Yara – where is she?
    - The Blackfish – where is he?
    - Gendry – where is he?
    - Lady Stoneheart – when will she be resurrected?
    - Kevan Lannister – hope he appears soon
    - Myrcella – how is she? And will there be a Dorne story?
    - Ravens sent out by the NW last season. What happened to them? Did only one arrive at Dragonstone – Davos?
    - Red comet references – the prophecy was never explained in the series
    - Dragonglass and the horn – especially the horn was never mentioned again after it was seen
    - Dragons – are they still held in cages now they gew bigger?
    - Illyrio Mopatis – hope he appears again next season

What becomes more and more obvious IMO is that it truly gets harder for the show creators and writers to cover everything now. Also everything they introduced…

So many characters, so many story lines…

Is it not heavily implied that Jojen is dead at the end of ADWD? Apparently, he was used as a blood sacrifice to awaken Bran’s gifts. If this turns out to be true, the show should follow the same route to get the same impact. Sounds like something David and Dan would do to make him die along the way to the cave, which would just be pointless.

Seeing as the goat herd actor was directed by Alex Graves it will happen in episode 8 or 10 (unless they moved the scene). I’m guessing the person in the EW pic is actually Hizdahr zo Loraq disguised as a commoner.

Episode 6 synopsis “Dany meets with supplicants” soo she holds court for the first time. In the book, the last supplicant in that chapter is the goatherder, so it follows that the goatherder should also appear in E6, no?

So that leave E7-10 to get Jorah banished and the dragons chained. Can we LEARN THEIR NAMES PLEASE?

The actor that played the goatherder was directed by Alex Graves. That is episode 8 or 10. I bet it’s 8. Or maybe they will do it in 10, along with the whole chaining of the dragons, everything in a single episode, I don’t know. Either way, the revelation of the goatherder won’t be featured in episode 6.

The horn Sam found is the real horn of Jormund, no question, especially the way they gave it a closeup, that’s the kind of shot they put in so years down the line when viewed as a whole people will be like ‘oh they planted that early’ thought the same when I read the chapter in the book. When the white walkers mount their final massive attack on Westeros the horn will be used to bring the wall down on top of them crushing most of their army, hopefully Bran will be able to help by warging into Danys dragons too!

That’s a good possibility. I predict that either they’ll miss each other in the confusion or that they do talk to one another but it will be so brief in the confusion that Jon will simply tell Bran to “run for your lives”! If not that, maybe Jon will warg unintentionally into Ghost for the first time while awake….he knows more about it now than ever before (since his experience with the wildings) and he surely suspects he can do it too.

Could somebody explain how it is more expensive to create a scene with the dragons getting chained than it is to show any other random scene with dragons? Surely with CGI, it doesnt matter what the computer generated graphics are actually doing…it would cost the same to have them singing and dancing as it would to have them resisting being chained. I understand that mixing live action with CGI might be more complicated, but we have had live/CGI interaction already

    Wight,

Well, normally they’re working with one tennis ball and one actor (Dany) from one, maybe two angles. Dany’s movement is slight (ever notice how she at most moves just a little and is usually seated or walking slowly). Ever notice how when they show all three dragons in motion there is either no people in the scene or the people in the scene are still? If they have multiple people around a moving dragon, you’re going to have multiple tennis balls and people from multiple angles…it would be much more complicated to film and animate. The complexity increases exponentially.

This what GRRM said about the Others (WW):”They are strange, beautiful…think, oh…the Sidhe made of ice, something like that…a different sort of life…inhuman, elegant, dangerous.” Martin also confirmed that the White Walkers are not “dead”, just an inhuman kind of life.[12] The Sidhe are a kind of otherworldly fairy creature from Irish mythology, said to inhabit burial mounds, etc., not unlike the Barrow-wights of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

I look for some pics and this is more or less what they’re supposed to look like (the second pic): http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=7998.0
