I met David at the SWPCA conference in Albuquerque when I presented a paper on the subversion of the Bildungsroman in Bran’s story. He’s a real down-to-earth guy — short, funny, massively interested in languages. A few of us English nerds/professors/MA students went out for drinks, and while he didn’t drink, we talked about grammar and languages all night. ‘Twas fun.
As a side note, I have “Valar Morghulis” and “Valar Dohaeris” tattoos up and down my arms, and he gave me an “authentic but not quite confirmed” pronunciation of them: “valar” is just what you’d think; the “gh” is a light gutteral sound in the top back of the throat, and the “i” is a long “e” (so the “lis” sounds kinda like how they pronounce “Lys” in the show); the “ae” is a diphthong similar to English, but pronounced with the “h” like “Hi”.

I’d like him to make more languages, valyrian, ghiscari, etc if you only see English and dothraki in the show, it will undermine the reality of the world because of the lack of diversity.

Is it Wednesday yet!?
This looks great, first time I’ve DVRd CNN since, well, never.
Enjoy the show tonight! A man awaits reactions.
Also, Happy Easter! Careful coloring those dragon’s eggs.

Pretty much confirmed we get new languages.

Very cool. Have you guys heard or noticed Dany’s command to her handmaidens?
It phonetically sounds like: Su coy coy! And then Irri or Missandei or whatever their names are come running.
Well, now I go around the house shouting Su coy coy! when I am looking for my wife.
She has no idea what I’m talking about and thinks I am completely nuts.
Which is true, of course.

They really need another warrior like Drogo and an actor like Jason to play him.
There will be a few really good characters coming up where they can cast a guy like Jason.
I really hope they do so, Drogo/Jason has left a void, when it comes to badass barbarian like warriors.
Strong Belwas, better be a badass.
And later on…
Victarion Greyjoy, better be a badass.
also in much later future,
Daario Naharis, better be a badass.
My dream casting for Daario would be… I don’t think Emilia would mind love scenes with this guy…
Dustin Clare as Daario Naharis (The actor who played the cocky, prettyboy warrior from Spartacus, Gannicus)

He would be perfect for Daario, all you got to do is dye his hair… And he was a very good actor in Sparty.

Well It’s quite nice of you, because “Zhey qoy qoyi!” means “Blood of my blood!” ;)

Speaking of Dothraki, I thought Emilia’s dialogue in that language sounded really good last week. More natural and believable than last year.

“A nice warm up to the ‘new’ episode tonight!”
Had to watch this one early so the internets wouldn’t give away any spoilers :(
Because of HBOGO this episode is not new :(
Hopefully, episode 3 wont be floating monday and everything will return to normal

Is there any chance the fans here could get a peek at your paper about Bran’s story? I’m intrigued.

Lex,
Even if it was a short sequence I thought Dany was fantastic in her one scene. My heart nearly broke when she flashed her eyes at Jorah after realizing that Silver was dead. She had that one moment of vulnerability, hopelessness and pain and then immediately turned to the task at hand. She will be a much more interesting Dany than the book version. Gradually developing like her character, Emilia Clarke is becoming quite the talented actress.

We hired David Peterson to design an alien language for the video game/TV show that I’m working on called Defiance. I imagine that he’s going to get a lot of work now that people have seen what he can do.

That was great. Love the fact that we are getting a High Valryian, and Old tongue. Maybe even some Ghiscari? All those Zs!
Oh and I am in love with Amrita Acharia. Gorgeous woman and even though she’s only had a couple of scenes she makes Irri come to life. I admit it was strange hearing her speak with an English accent!
It is Known.

Yes! My question has just been answered! D&D just mentioned that they are interested in bringing David back to create more languages, such as High Valyrian and Bravosi! My only concern is that it might get difficult for new viewers to distinguish between all the new languages. David would have to make them incredibly different from one another, or maybe they could change the style of the text for the subtitles for each dialect. Either way, I’ve been hoping they would do this, since Danny still has quite a few travel destinations coming up in future seasons.
Rukie44Quote Reply
Lots of people handle reading subtitles of actual languages in foreign films without knowing or caring what languages are spoken. As long as the languages sound just a bit different (to create a proper audio ‘texture’) for us who do pay attention, it will be enough.

Very interesting stuff!
I wonder if Peterson has “Mild-mannered linguist by day, profane Dothraki warrior by night” on his business card? XD

FYI -
here’s a longer clip from this program. Too bad they’re not willing to make the entire show available on demand.

OT, but this is WEIRD: You know how youtube sometimes has ads before videos? Well, the “ad” I just saw before a video was the featurette where Michelle Clapton talks about Renly’s new armour. WTF?!?

Nagga’s Kin,
I agree!
It would be nice to watch it without the news scroll bar at the bottom… but until then I posted a 640×360 version here: http://www.spoilertv.com/2012/04/game-of-thrones-cnn-next-list-to-air.html

Langkard,
“I maintain that Martin does this … to stress the fiction – if not outright myth – of the Bildungsroman; the plot construction of a willing journey, the idea that maturity and harmony are the end goals, and the proposition that the world will actually accept the character’s new being as a heroic figure (or even that the hero will succeed), are all subverted, ironically twisted, or destroyed because Bran is already in possession of that which makes him a hero – the deconstructed messianic.”
(c) Sean Brower, 2011… that may be a little vague, but, there you go.
Basically, I think Martin uses organic conventions to tear down mechanical conventions, and I explore this weird use of subversion specifically with Bran. My plan is to extend this to the other children (when I have time), because Martin just loves doing this. Thanks for the interest :)

Hollyoak,
That’s super cute of you.. haha. I too like the sound of those words.
MimsyQuote Reply
Thx darquemode.
Keep in mind that qoy qoyi = “blood of my blood” refers to a blood oath of fealty, i.e. obedience to the death. Since both a khal and a bloodrider can utter these words, the meaning depends on who the speaker is. If it’s the khal, it shows respect for the bloodrider while also holding him to his oath. Danaerys, of course, freed everyone from prior oaths and slavery before she stepped into that funeral pyre, so her entire khalasar – such as it is – consists of volunteers. That’s why the meaning is more loving when she says it, even though she is the khaleesi.
In the absence of a feudal context, e.g. when you say it to your main squeeze, it could easily be misinterpreted to mean something like “bring forth ye furry handcuffes”, HHNN. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
OTOH, if garden variety romance is what you have in mind, you might want to use one of these instead:
shekh ma shieraki anni = my sun and stars (spoken to a man)
jalan atthirari anni = moon of my life (spoken to a woman)

David is such a great ambassador for the show and I like that the tone of the piece was not all NERRDS!
Also , I am taken by the idea that David is what the lead singer of Kit/John approved band Fleet Foxes, would look like without the beard.

Defiance looks like an interesting SF concept, and Rockne S. O’Bannon being involved is very promising. Strange that you place the video game before the TV show when mentioning it though.
spacechampionQuote Reply
Probably because that’s the part of it that I am involved with. Also because Trion approached Syfy with the idea to begin, and we have been working on it for years while Syfy ramped up development relatively recently. The projects are intertwined and depend on each other though, and I am equally excited for both.

Just a quick mention. I may be remembering this wrong because it’s been a while since I’ve read the books, but weren’t those word High Valyrian and not Dothraki? Has he actually started messing with any valyrian?
